1.  問題の所在  Issue

本館は、2024年4月1日より1年間の改修工事を行い、2025年4月1日に利用を再開する予定です。この本館改修工事の議論を行っている本館総合設計定例会議では教室窓の網戸設置に関する検討を行っています。
The Honkan is scheduled to undergo renovation for one year starting from April 1, 2024, with the resumption of use planned for April 1, 2025. Regarding the Honkan renovation, we are considering whether to install window screens on the classroom windows or not.

網戸の設置は、歴史的建築として評価が高い*本館の内外観を変化させ、本館の美的・文化的・歴史的価値、そして対外的な評価に影響を与える可能性があります。

The installation of window screens will alter the interior and exterior appearance of the Honkan, which is highly regarded as a historic structure. Therefore, it may affect the aesthetic, cultural, and historical value of the main building, as well as its external reputation. (For details, please refer to the questionnaire text under "2. Purpose of this Honkan Renovation.")

一方で、頻度や回数は把握されていませんが、窓開放時に虫が入り授業が中断した、ハチが入り別教室に移動したケースもあり、網戸設置によりこのような事態の発生を少なくする効果があります。
On the other hand, although the frequency and occurrence are not precisely known, there have been cases where insects entered the classrooms and interrupted classes due to windows being opened during classes in the Honkan. Additionally, there have been instances of bees entering and necessitating the relocation of classes to different rooms. The installation of window screens may reduce the occurrence of such situations.

2.  今回の本館改修工事の目的  The purpose of renovation of the Honkan

本館は、1944年に中島⾶⾏機三鷹研究所の設計本館として建設され、1953年に著名な建築家W.M.ヴォーリズによる全面改修を経て、現在まで70年以上、ICUの中⼼的な建物として存在してきました。本館は、戦争の反省という開学の理念、その後70年のICUの歴史そのものです。2003年の外壁改修により外観は開学当時から変化したものの、学生・教職員・卒業生などICUに関わる全ての人々の記憶と結びついている象徴的な建物です。また、ICUを表す写真では本館南面と芝生広場（通称：バカ山）が使われることがほとんどで、ICUの景観・イメージとしても重要です。近年は、その外部、内部の雰囲気からドラマ撮影などで使用されています。
The Honkan was constructed as the Mitaka Research Institute of the Nakajima Aircraft Company in 1944 and underwent a comprehensive renovation by the renowned architect W.M. Vories in 1953. For over 70 years since then, it has served as a central building of ICU. The Honkan embodies the spirit of reflection on war, which was the founding principle of ICU, and represents the history of ICU over the past 70 years. Although its appearance has changed since the opening due to external wall renovations in 2003, it remains a symbolic building intertwined with the memories of all individuals associated with ICU, including students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Furthermore, photographs representing ICU often feature the southern facade of the Honkan and the lawn area (commonly known as "Bakayama"), highlighting their significance in ICU's landscape and image. In recent years, the external and internal ambiance of these areas has been utilized for filming dramas and other purposes.

歴史的建築としても評価が高く、日本建築学会は2016年に「登録有形文化財の要件を十分に満たしている」と報告し、国際的学術組織のDOCOMOMO Japanも残すべきモダニズム建築として2020年に認定を行っています。
The Honkan is highly regarded as a historic structure, with the Architectural Institute of Japan reporting in 2016 that it "sufficiently meets the criteria for registered tangible cultural properties." Additionally, the international academic organization DOCOMOMO Japan certified the Honkan as a modernist architecture worth preserving in 2020.

今回の改修工事は、本館の機能性、耐震性を改善し、空調換気設備・電気設備等の更新を行い、ICUの歴史および機能の中⼼かつ象徴的な建物である本館を、将来にわたり長く生かしていくことを目的にしています。
The purpose of this renovation is to improve the functionality and seismic resistance of the Honkan, update air conditioning and ventilation systems, electrical facilities, and other aspects, ensuring the long-term preservation of the Honkan, which serves as the heart and symbol of ICU's history and function, for the future.

3.  改修による教室温熱環境の改善   Improvement of Classroom Thermal Environment through Renovation of Honkan

現在の本館利用では、暑いから窓を開けるケースがほとんどだと思いますが、改修工事により本館内の温熱環境が大きく改善します。
Currently, it is common to open windows due to the heat in the Honkan, but the renovation project will significantly improve the thermal environment inside the Honkan.

① 個別空調の設置    
各教室に、個別に温度設定可能な冷暖房が設置されます。（温度設定の範囲、春・秋の冷暖房の使用について、一定の制限はあり）。
Installation of Individual Air Conditioning
Individual Air Conditioning will be installed in each classroom. (There are certain restrictions on temperature settings and the use of heating and cooling during spring and autumn.)

② 外調機（外気処理空調機）の更新    
外調機はコントロールした温度で外気を供給します。温度変化を伴わずに換気ができ、窓を閉めたままで、定められた教室内必要換気量の換気が可能です。
Replacement of Outdoor Air Handling Unit
Outdoor Air Handling Unit will supply outside air at controlled temperatures. This enables ventilation without temperature fluctuations, allowing for the required ventilation volume within the classroom even with the windows closed

③ 窓（サッシと窓ガラス）の更新による断熱性能の向上    
新しいサッシを取り付け、Low-Eガラスを導入することで断熱性能が向上します。
Enhancement of Insulation Performance through Window (Frame and Glass) Replacement
Installing new frames and introducing Low-E glass will improve insulation performance.

④ 外壁部分の断熱
外部に面した壁の内側に断熱材を設置し、断熱性能が向上します。
Insulation of Exterior Walls
Insulation material will be installed on the inner side of walls facing the exterior, improving insulation performance.

4. 網戸を用いないで虫の侵入を防ぐ工夫    Measures to Prevent Insect Intrusion without Using Window Screens

網戸設置以外でも工夫次第で教室内への虫の侵入を減らすことは可能です。
It is possible to reduce insect intrusion into classrooms through various measures other than installing window screens.

① 教室窓周辺に、時間や季節を明記した注意書きを掲示する   
5～10月頃の日没前後から夜間は、蛾が、5月～11月頃の天気の良い日はハチが入る可能性があります。」など掲示し状況を周知することで、不用意な窓開放や開けっ放しを防ぐことができます。
Posting Notices around Classroom Windows
By posting notices specifying times and seasons, such as "During dusk from May to October and on fine days from month to month, there may be moth or bee intrusions," awareness of the situation can be raised, preventing unnecessary opening or leaving windows open.

② 周辺の虫の発生源を少なくする    
暗いヤブ状の植生は虫の発生源・誘因となります。今回工事で、本館北側の地表の空調機をT館屋上に移動するため、空調機とその周囲の植物は撤去されます。
Minimizing Insect Breeding Sites in the Surrounding Area
Dark, bushy vegetation serves as breeding grounds and attractants for insects. As part of this renovation project, the outdoor conditioning unit on the north side of the Honkan will be relocated to the T-kan rooftop, and the unit and surrounding bush will be removed.

③ 窓の開口部を制限する    
サッシのレールに金具をつけ、開口を20cm程度などに制限することで虫が入りにくくなります。転落防止の観点からも、現在、多くの建物で使われている手法です。
Restricting Window Openings
Installing brackets on window rails to limit openings to around 20 cm makes it difficult for insects to enter. This method is commonly used in many buildings from the perspective of fall prevention as well.

5. 網戸設置を行った場合    Benefits of Installing Window screens

① 窓開放がしやすくなる   
暑さや解放感などから教室窓を開放しても*、網戸があれば授業中の虫の侵入や、虫刺され等を防止できます。一方で、網戸設置が窓の開放を誘発し、室内の温熱環境が不均一になる場合もあります。冷暖房中の窓開放はエネルギーロスとなります。
*外気温が心地よい春・秋については、省エネの観点から冷暖房の運転を停止する可能性があります。
Facilitating window opening
If there are window screens on the windows of the Honkan classrooms, opening the windows during classes can prevent insect intrusions and insect bites. However, installing window screens may encourage window opening, leading to uneven thermal environments indoors. Opening windows during heating or cooling results in energy loss.
*During pleasant spring and autumn weather, there is a possibility of limiting the operation of heating and cooling systems from an energy-saving perspective.

6. 網戸の設置方式案と設置イメージ    Installation Method and Image of Window Screens
網戸は外観に配慮し、教室側（内側）に設置する予定です。設置イメージは以下をご確認ください。
