LET US KNOW WHICH AREAS BELOW YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP US WITH, AND WHAT SPECIFICALLY YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO:
1.  HOUSING: Scout out affordable housing (securing, assist with lease signing)
2.  FURNITURE & CLOTHING  Our new neighbors need a home that is fully furnished, some clothing needs --NOT an overabundance--and often, diapers. Initially, these volunteers make sure the necessities are in place:  beds, new mattresses,  furniture, housewares, plates, kitchen supplies, and all room items.  (Don't do big drives, but go through established local partners (Furniture Sharehouse, IFCA Thrift Shop, St. Johns Thrift Shop, Career Closet) Committee volunteers are responsible for cleaning, staging, and transportation “Move-In Day.”
3.  HOUSEHOLD & PERSONAL CARE ITEMS: Support Housing/Furniture & Clothing Committee stocking the home with cleaning and other household supplies and personal care items. Committee members will work initially with the Furniture & Clothing committee to collect what a family needs in the first few months after arrival. After that, volunteers may want to assist as  needed with donations.
4.  COMMUNITY ORIENTATION:  Show family where to grocery shop, how to navigate public transportation, get a library card, meet local businesses, etc. Help them be part of your community.
5.  ESOL & ADULT ED: Each new family has a team dedicated to improving English skills as an importatn factor in long run success. from experienced ESL teachers to occasional ESL tutors, you can make a difference in the lives of both parents and children.
6. EMPLOYMENT: Identify potential employment opportunities. Help newcomers identify their employable skills, now and longer term, and help them  find and prepare for interviews, and successfully transition to employment.
7.  FAMILY BUDGETING & FINANCES: Help with family budgeting and finances, including setting up a bank account, credit and taxes. Work with the family on a timeline of self-sufficiency in 6-12 months. Co-chairs must be comfortable having sometimes difficult conversations about money.
8.  DRIVING: Provide transportation as needed for family to doctor's appointments, school meetings, etc. Commitment to drive more than one time is required and preference is for drivers who can participate over 4-6 month period. Volunteers must have a clean driving record.
9.  GOVERNMENT SERVICES: Help newcomers navigate the local Dept. of Social Services offices, DMV  and/or other government agencies as needed.
10. HEALTHCARE: Help the family navigate the medical/ insurance system.   Attend the various appointments that constitute the initial federal health screenings. Connect the family to a medical home that accepts Medicaid. Assist with orientation about the healthcare system, as well as managing any medical issue that may arise.
11. ORGANIZATIONAL - VOLUNTEER  COORDINATION: Help recruit volunteers, keep track of their information and hours volunteered. Oversee and link volunteer assignments to the family support and assistance teams. Chair(s) liaise between the committees and designated point persons at HIAS or other Resettlement Agency.
12. ORGANIZATIONAL - GROUP FUNDRAISING & FINANCES:  Help strategize, organize and execute the fundraising efforts and outreach to potential funding sources. Oversee the expenditure of the resettlement funds raised.
13.  OTHER - Suggest other ways you might be able to assist refugees, through Open Arms for Refugees
Thank you for supporting Open Arms for Refugees. Give us a sense of the time you can commit to support  refugees in the coming 6 months. (There is no bad answer.)
Again, thanks. We each have different skills and capacities, but together we complement each other and can do wonderful things. We welcome our new neighbors in that spirit.
