Helping Parent Form

At Magothy Cooperative Preschool, you don’t just sign your child up for preschool, you sign your family up for preschool. 

Magothy Cooperative Preschool values a cooperative approach which requires a commitment of time and effort from all families. This includes the unique opportunity for parents to participate in our classrooms as Helping Parents. Families are woven into the fabric of our school, and the role of Helping Parent is essential to this structure. Parents are fortunate enough to get to be a part of their preschooler’s day by assisting teachers, engaging with students, and helping out in the classrooms. Helping Parents must attend Coop 101 and pass an online background check. Helping parents are active participants in the school, engaged in their child’s preschool day and contributors to the classroom community. This requires a committed, dedicated person in the Helping Parent role.

Being a Helping Parent involves playing and interacting with children, traversing trails, carrying baskets and bags, and a bit of cleaning. If you have limitations that would make parts of this challenging, we will work with you to find a solution that works best for you and the school.

Helping Parents will need to dress appropriately for both play and the weather. This may include sufficient layers, hats, mittens, proper foot wear, and rain/snow gear when applicable.

I understand that fulfilling my Helping Parent shift is a part of our preschool contract. In the event I am sick or unable to fulfill my shift I will do my best to find someone to cover my shift. (reach out to class families)

Helping Parents are expected to be present and engaged during their shifts. Please refrain from taking phone calls or text messages unless it is an emergency. While helping parents do often step back to take pictures, most of the time should be spent interacting with the kids and assisting the teachers. *

At Magothy, we use positive guidance and modeling to help children learn to identify and respond to their emotions. Helping Parents are expected to use positive language and remain calm when responding to big emotions. Teachers will handle confrontations/tricky situations, but it is important to follow their lead and model good responses. *

Parents/Guardians/Grown-ups/Helping Parents/Employees WILL:

•Demonstrate professional conduct and integrity, as role models for all children.
•Respect all families and children. Provide positive support and encouragement.
•Be punctual for helping parent shifts.                       
•Respect the hours of the class when dropping off and picking up children.

Parents/Guardians/Grown-ups/Helping Parents/Employees will NOT:

•Use offensive, insulting, foul, and/or abusive language or gestures, either on the school grounds or during any school sponsored or associated activity, towards any person, for any reason.
•Encourage or teach dangerous play or inappropriate conduct.
•Engage in the use of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, and/or tobacco on the school grounds or during any school trips.
•Engage in or provoke any form of physical violence. *

As an adult volunteering in a child care setting, Helping Parents are mandated reporters.  You are required to report suspected child abuse or neglect to Social Services. More information (signs of abuse and neglect) on this and how to contact Social Services will be shared with you before school starts.  *

Any parent or employee found to be in violation of the Magothy Cooperative Code of Conduct will be subject to disciplinary action by the Board of Directors of Magothy Cooperative Preschool. Disciplinary actions may range from warnings or fines, to dismissal from the Magothy Cooperative Preschool program.
