CFG Workshop : Computational and Analytical Skills for Biologists
Workshop Timing: September 13-17th, 2021
Event Address: The event will be held remotely on Zoom
Contact us at: cfg@brookes.ac.uk

Day 1 and 3 will be workshops on generic computational skills for biologists who have little to no experience in R and/or the Linux environment and would like to gain further skills in these areas. Day 2 will be a review of basic statistical analysis in R and an introduction to linear models. An undergraudate course in statistics or a working knowledge of t-tests, one-way ANOVA and simple linear regression are a prerequiste for Day 2 (this material will be reviewed but at a fairly rapid pace). Day 4 and 5 will be end-to-end tutorials on analyzing RNAseq and ATAC-seq (or ChIP-seq) data respectively.

Please note sessions will be held from 9:30 to 12:30 in the morning and 1:30-4:30 in the afternoon. Each session will be a mix of lectures/demos and practical exercises. Afternoon sessions on Days 4 and 5 may be flexible. If you are planning on working with R and/or already have RNASeq or ATACseq data you are encouraged to bring your own data (for working in the afternoons where possible). You are welcome to attend any or all sessions but make sure you have the appropriate background if you are planning on skipping sessions. If you are unsure at to what constitutes an "appropriate" background for a particular session, please email me cfg@brookes.ac.uk

Required
This workshop will be held remotely so you will be expected to have the appropriate computing environment. This includes having a working installation of R and R Studio. Both are available for Windows, MAC OS and Linux OSes. Additionally, you will need access to a Linux/Unix terminal. This is available on Macs OS already (https://macpaw.com/how-to/use-terminal-on-mac) and can also be installed on Windows 10 (https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/ubuntu-on-windows#1-overview). If you need help with installations, please email cfg@brookes.ac.uk. We will also offer a one hour installation support session on 10th September, if needed. If you think that you can't get the appropriate computing environment on your computer, check the 2nd button below and we will try and provide access to a remote connection to a Brookes computer with the appropriate computing environment for the duration of the workshop (or you can attend the workshop from SNC 4.26, the genomics computer lab). *
A copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided.
