Confidentiality is a student's right to privacy; guarded as much as permitted by law, ethics, and school rules. All meetings held with the service provider will remain confidential unless the student or parent gives permission to share information with related parties.

Exceptions to confidentiality include but are not limited to:

1. The student or their authorized representative authorizes the release of confidential information in writing.

2. Information is shared with other HUSD staff to assist in supervision and/or treatment planning.

3. A student presents a clear and present physical danger to themselves or others.

4. The service provider receives information that any minor has been the victim of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment, or neglect. In these circumstances, Child Protective Services or law enforcement will be notified.

Counseling can only be effective if there is a trusting relationship between the service providers and students. Although the student’s legal guardian can expect to be kept up to date as to the student’s progress toward goals, the parents/guardian will not typically be given detailed information obtained from discussions between the service provider and student in sessions.
