DESCRIPTION:
Kimberly Bartosik and Burr Johnson co-teach material from I hunger for you (2018, Bam Next Wave). Following a brief warm up, we will teach phrase material from the work referred to as "The Lanes."  We will process it as we did in the original creation of the work, deconstructing and reconstructing its parts to create dynamic, rhythmic pathways of movement that increase in intensity and accumulate in energy and breath. Wear sneakers and bring knee pads and a water bottle. Get ready to get sweaty!  https://www.daela.org/i-hunger-for-you

BIO:
Choreographer, performer, educator, essayist Kimberly Bartosik creates viscerally provocative, ferociously intimate choreographic projects that dramatically illuminate the ephemeral nature of performance while critically, tenderly, and violently etching away at deeply distressing threads of our society. Her recent piece, through the mirror of their eyes (Live Arts, 2020) was a 2020 Bessie Award Honoree for Outstanding Performance & Outstanding Performer (Burr Johnson). Recent awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship; Virginia B. Toulmin Women Leaders in Dance Fellowship at Center for Ballet and the Arts; MAP Fund, National Dance Project; USAI; and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her articles Give Artists a Home! and It’s Time to Reimagine Dance Funding, were recently featured in Dance Magazine.

Burr Johnson has danced for John Jasperse Projects, Helen Simoneau Danse, Kimberly Bartosik/daela, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. His choreographic work has been presented through Movement Research, Dixon Place, Abrons Art Center, Danspace Project, New York Live Arts, The American Dance Festival, GIBNEY, and Works and Process at the Guggenheim. He has also worked for Marina Abramović/Givenchy, Walter Dundervill, Ryan McNamara, Boris Charmatz, Isabel Lewis, Nick Mauss, Peter Sellars, Christopher Williams, Bill Young, and Jack Ferver.  He has guest-taught at Henrico Center for the Arts, Philadelphia University of the Arts, the University of Utah, Salem College, MoMA PS1, Goucher College, Virginia Commonwealth University, UNC Greensboro, and The American Dance Festival.
