Section Two: Instrument Selection
Please have your student notate their first, second, and third choice of instrument to play. It is our goal to give as many students as possible the opportunity to play their first-choice instrument - but there are some limitations:

1. The Percussion section will be by audition only. Students interested in joining the percussion section must audition for Ms.Zapata after school on Wednesday, September 28th. ***Not all students who audition will be selected. If they are NOT chosen for the percussion section, they will be encouraged to play their second or third choice instrument.

2. Our inventory of school-owned instruments is limited. If you opt to purchase/rent your own instrument (woodwind or brass), your first choice will be honored. If you opt to borrow a school-owned instrument, we will do the best we can. However, if there aren't enough for everyone, student names will be put into a lottery system. Students who do not get selected from the lottery will be encouraged to play their second or third choice instrument. Students who borrow a school-owned instrument will be required to submit a contract and a $100 maintenance fee before the instrument goes home.

***ALL students are responsible for purchasing the needed supplies for their own specific use (e.g., valve oil, slide grease, reeds, cork grease, mouthpiece cleaners, and neck straps; sticks, mallets, and practice pads, other)

Section Three: Student Behavior, Attendance, and Practice Expectations
Our Expectations - Please Read Carefully!
Attendance/Practice:

All students participating in the Ada Harris Band Program are expected to attend every sectional and full ensemble rehearsal.

Sectionals are held before school from 7:00-7:45am. It is imperative that they arrive on time and ready to play!

Flute and Percussion: Mondays
Trumpet: Tuesdays
Clarinet and Saxophone: Wednesdays
Low Brass: Thursdays

Full Ensemble rehearsals are held right after school on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00pm. (They will have a brief window to eat lunch and clean their mouths before we begin).

*Music students must commit to practicing at least 3 times per week outside of their scheduled rehearsals and sectionals. The recommended amount of practice time is 20+ minutes per session at home. Students that follow these guidelines as a minimum standard will be more likely to succeed in the band program.

If your child must miss a sectional or full ensemble rehearsal, please communicate with Ms.Zapata and your student's sectional coach asap. If too many rehearsals/sectionals are missed, they risk letting down their team and may not be prepared well-enough to attend performances. Parents will be notified if a student misses two or more consecutive rehearsals/sectionals. Ms.Zapata and the sectional coaches reserve the right to pull students from performances at any time if a student is not meeting attendance expectations.

Behavior:
All students in band are part of a team. We must work together to learn, play, and perform! Students are expected to follow the Cardiff way at all times. They must show respect to their director, coaches, peers, and musical instrument. They must demonstrate responsibility by showing up on time, and coming to all rehearsals/sectionals prepared with their instrument, music, pencils, water bottle, necessary instrument supplies and positive attitudes.

Other important rules/expectations:

1. Do not touch/play any instrument that does not belong to you.
2. Sit quietly when listening to instructions. Raise your hand when you'd like to speak.
3. Practice (outside of rehearsal/sectional time) for at least 90 minutes every week. Come to rehearsal prepared to play your music!
4. Clean your instrument often! (And, do not eat or drink anything-other than water- before or during your practice/rehearsal session. If you do eat/drink before playing, be sure to brush your teeth and wash your hands before picking up your instrument!)
5. Do NOT try to fix any instrument by yourself. If there is something wrong, contact Ms. Zapata and/or your sectional coach immediately. We will advise you as to whether we can fix the issue, or whether your instrument needs to be taken to the shop for repair.

If a child is not meeting behavior expectations (i.e. exhibiting inappropriate and/or disruptive behaviors), Ms.Zapata and/or the sectional coach will communicate with parents to discuss the situation and create a plan to help the student improve. If, however, the behavior does not improve or further issues arise, Ms.Zapata and the sectional coaches reserve the right to remove a student from the rehearsal space for the day (they will be escorted to the front office) - and, if necessary, from the band program entirely. Any acts of violence or intentional damage will result in the student's immediate removal from the Ada Harris Band Program.
