3D Printed Coral and Acoustic Enrichment to Aid in Coral Reef Restoration
I am currently a sophomore in high school and am enrolled in a college level science research course.  I was planning a research project for this summer(2020), but due to the circumstances, the project is not feasible.  My project was to test if 3D printed coral and the use of acoustic enrichment enhanced coral reef restoration.  I planned on setting up an experiment in a real environment in Mexico(I will obtain permits as needed).  Due to the circumstances with COVID-19, I hoping to gain more background knowledge that could be useful for my research and experiment next year. This survey is to help me obtain some background knowledge and feedback on my methodology.  Participation in this survey is completely voluntary.  If you decide not to participate there will not be any negative consequences.  Listed below are the four main articles I pulled information from, and the main findings-

Acoustic enrichment can enhance fish community development on degraded coral reef habitat. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-13186-2 - Can acoustic enrichment be useful when used in coral restoration?

Understanding the Importance of Habitat Complexity for Juvenile Fish and the Application of 3D Printed Corals for Reef Restoration. https://search.proquest.com/openview/aed84849eac92e5e618e8fc7e1eca456/1?pqorigsite=gscholar&cbl=18750&diss=y- Does structural complexity effect species diversity and population?

3-D printed coral could help endangered reefs. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/10/191016124633.htm - Can 3D printed coral be used to aid coral restoration?

Evaluation of the effectiveness of 3D-printed corals to attract coral reef fish at Tamarindo Reef, Culebra, Puerto Rico. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326356210_Evaluation_of_the_effectiveness_of_3D-Printed_corals_to_attract_coral_reef_fish_at_Tamarindo_Reef_Culebra_Puerto_Rico - Do fish prefer artificial or natural coral?  and what factor does structural complexity play?

This is my current methodology(I plan to produce it next summer(2021))                                                                                 -Print complex 3D printed coral out of a biodegradable filament                                                                                             - Get small speakers that can play a 24/7 playback from a real, healthy reef                                                           - Place the coral, as well as the speakers, into a natural habitat in Cozumel, Mexico                                                    - Watch as the coral grows and measure the growth over the summer(June-end of August)                              -Please leave any comments, or questions.
Can you offer any suggestions for improvement or potential roadblocks in the proposed research methodology?
As I continue to refine my research plan, I will be broadening my knowledge of coral reef restoration techniques.  Please enter your email address if you’d be willing to discuss coral reef restoration with me and I will be in touch.
