The purpose of this research is to collect information regarding how LGBTQIA+ individuals find and build supportive communities, both online and offline. The information you provide may be used in the researcher’s project and report for the class Anthropology 390: Community-Based Research Methods at Athabasca University. Information will be gathered through direct observation of virtual communities, reviewing local and online resources and community notes, and online surveys. The researcher will bring the information in the report back to the community for verification.
You will be provided with copies of all of the information that the researcher gathers from you, and a copy of the final report, using the email you provided above. If you so desire, the information that you provide will be destroyed. If the original data (notes and recordings) are not returned to the participant, they will be securely stored by the researcher for 6 months, and will then be destroyed by shredding paper and erasing electronic files.
All surveys will be anonymous. Only your email and demographic information will be collected (age, cultural background, gender identity, sexuality) but it will not be linked to your name.
At all times you have the right to:
1. Refuse to answer questions.
2. Terminate your participation at any point.
3. Withdraw from the study at any time. In this case the researcher will only use information given by you with your permission. If you do not want him/her to use this information, the researcher will either destroy it or give it to you.
