Welcome!
The Kiwanis Club of Los Altos would like to express how much we appreciate your participation! Children and pets (and adults) come to celebrate this unique and engaging community event. Memories are made from this special day.
History:
The Los Altos Kiwanis Pet Parade was founded in 1946 as a chance for children and their families from the Los Altos/Los Altos Hills community to showcase their pets. This Heritage event is one of our club’s favorite events, serving the children of our community.
Guidelines:
Please read through these guidelines carefully and distribute to each member of your group. A PDF copy of these rules can be found on our website: www. losaltoskiwanis.org under the Pet Parade event tab.
- Parade space is limited. Not all applications may be accepted. If necessary, priority will be determined based on relevance, timely submission and local nature.
- You are welcome to carry a banner with your group’s name on it.
- No solicitation of any kind is allowed; whether for profit or non-profit, political, and/or inappropriate messages.
- Distribution of anything (giveaways, freebies, flyers, etc.) before, during or after the event is prohibited.
- No sale of any product is allowed.
- Upon acceptance of your application, you will be notified of your parade assembly area.
- Please find your assembly area by 9:30 a.m. on the day of the parade. The parade will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and is usually over by 11:00 a.m.
- Pet owners must pick up their pet’s “refuse” before, during, and after the parade. Bring the necessary disposable bags and use them. The Police Department asks that this is enforced.
HORSES: Unfortunately, we currently cannot accommodate horse or pony entrants this year because we do not have a safe and secure place for them to assemble.
People Safety
The weather can be very hot on the day of the parade. Water, hats and sunscreen are highly recommended for people.
Emergency/Lost and Found is at the Kiwanis Headquarters located at the intersection of Second and State Streets, by the Announcement/Grand stand.
The Los Altos Police Department will be on duty. To avoid congestion, they have asked parade marchers to disperse immediately at the end of the parade at State and Main Streets by exiting right towards the North Plaza.
Pet Safety
Please bring water and/or portable water bowls for your pets as the weather can be very warm. Extra care needs to be taken with older pets and those with thick coats. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws. Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require sunscreen on its nose and ear tips.
In hot weather your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions are very serious. You should be aware of the signs of heat stress, which can include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, vomiting or a deep red or purple tongue.
If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower his body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower its core body temperature. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet’s head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get your pet to a veterinarian immediately.
