Working as a driver education teacher is a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in a student's life. It also offers teachers an opportunity for a second career.
The SUNY Broome Program, designed for certified teachers 7-12 or K-12, is the pathway to this exciting career.
SUNY Broome Driver Education (DE) Teacher Prep Program consisting of four courses.
These SUNY Broome courses are provided through the Continuing Education Department, are self pay, and carry no official college credits. Each course is equivalent to that of a 3 credit, college level class. (4 courses total, ~12 credits). Upon completion, a transcript will be provided but this will not carry official college credit and are not associated with nor can be transferred to any degree program. No tuition grants are affiliated with the program.
The following coursework at SUNY Broome DE Teacher Prep is required for SED approval.
Provisional DE Approval
After completing the first two courses, Traffic Safety 1 & Traffic Safety 2, teachers will apply for a 4 year Provisional DE Approval . Once approved by the State Education Department and Department of Motor Vehicles, teachers may begin teaching Driver Education.
Permanent DE Approval
After completing the last two courses, Risk Management and Problems and Trends, teachers then will apply for a Permanent DE Approval.
By the fourth year, all 4 courses above must be completed. If not completed, an additional course, Administration & Study of NY DE Policies is required and must be successfully completed for Permanent DE Approval.
