British East/Southeast Asian Theatre Freelance Survey
Thank you for agreeing to fill out this survey.

My name is Lucy Sheen and I am a member of the National Freelance Taskforce set up to bring the particular concerns and voices of freelancers to the national conversation and government level.

In these uncertain times where so much is changing and will continue to change, it is an opportune moment to rethink how our industry operates and see how we can build a better and more equitable one.

In order for us to do that, it feels incumbent on us to have a better in depth understanding of British East and South East Asian freelancers*, their experiences, their current situation and their thoughts and hopes for the future and how the artistic community in the UK is made up. This survey focuses on the BESEA experience in the industry, particularly with regards to racism.

Freelancers make up 70% of the theatre industry and yet have very little status and power in the sector. All too often our freelancers have been left out, ignored or worse still, white-washed. Your answers will help us build an accurate picture of artists of East Asian and Southeast Asian heritage and provide me with valuable information that I can bring to the taskforce and give voice to at the table, and to BEATS, of which I am a member.

* British East and South East Asian is defined as anyone with East Asian or South East Asian heritage who normally lives and works in the UK.
