LOCAL BUSINESS IMPACT ASSESSMENT
On Monday, August 10, 2020, a rapid, high-wind thunderstorm complex impacted Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Sustained wind gusts from 70 mph to 100 mph+ led to widespread damage to real property and public facilities citywide. The City's transportation system was also disrupted due to loss of some traffic signals, road closures and a temporary suspension of fixed route transit service. Likewise, power outages as well as phone and internet service interruption affected businesses in the time period immediately following weather events.
Given this broad scope of impact, we would like your help as a business owner or manager identifying scale of losses resulting from the August 2020 Midwest derecho (wind storm). Responses to this survey should include costs incurred starting August 10th as well as estimates of any anticipated future costs due to effects of this weather event.
Primarily, survey questions focus on the following areas:
>>> FINANCIAL LOSS: Figures attributed to measured losses recorded on a balance sheet or other financial statements.
>>> ECONOMIC LOSS: Incurred when cost exceeds revenue and including opportunity costs (missed income)
Your responses will be used to measure the adverse impact of recent business disruption in Cedar Rapids economy. Individual survey information will be tabulated, and only aggregate cost totals for the City will be shared with economic development officials, state and local government decision-makers, business & industry associations, non-profit organizations, and/or other entities active within the disaster recovery effort.
By completing the optional survey you are voluntarily agreeing to take part in this data collection project. Submitting this survey indicates that you have read and consent to the terms of this survey project, all of your questions are answered, only best available information is being reported, and you are older than 18 years in age.
For more information about this survey project, please contact David Connolly, AICP, Economic Development Specialist, with the City of Cedar Rapids by email (
