2024 VCSS Conference Betsy Barton Teacher of the Year Application

Betsy Barton was a passionate supporter of every child in Virginia's public schools and an incredible advocate for all things related to history. VCSS and Encyclopedia Virginia seek to honor her legacy and spirit by recognizing exceptional classroom teachers in our state.

The recipient of this year's award will be honored at the VCSS conference.

Award
$500 stipend from Social Studies School Service, recognition at the Virginia Conference for Social Studies Educators annual conference, AND a featured presentation at the following conference!

Eligibility
  • Have you been teaching a minimum of three years?
  • Are you employed in good standing by a school district or private school located in Virginia?
  • Do you currently teach social studies?
  • Do you plan to continue teaching a minimum of one year after receiving this award?
  • If you answered "Yes!" to all four questions, you are eligible!

The teacher shall have demonstrated exceptional ability in all of the following five areas:

  1. develop or use instructional materials creatively and effectively.
  2. incorporate innovative and verifiable, effective instructional strategies and techniques.
  3. utilize new scholarship from appropriate fields.
  4. foster the development and practice of citizen participation among students.
  5. show evidence of professional involvement such as sharing expertise in workshops, curriculum development committees, association and council activities, etc.
Applications are due by December 15, 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Correspondence selection notification will be sent to our award recipient by December 15, 2023.
