Character Breakdown:
The following is a detailed breakdown of the roles in The Wizard of Oz and specific vocal ranges. The given ranges are approximate and may vary. Some roles may be doubled for some performers.

Although the characters should be reminiscent of the movie, please focus on telling the story yourself rather than re-enacting the film. We are looking for storytellers with strong emotional and physical commitment to the characters.

Dorothy Gale: Femme, teens - 30s, vocal range: G3-C5 (opt. E5)

A young person from Kansas, innocent but loyal and protective of those she holds dear. She is a dreamer. She discovers her strengths as she conquers her obstacles in OZ. Must love dogs.

Toto

Dorothy's Dog is played by an actual dog in this production. If you have a dog you'd like to submit, please let us know on your audition form. They should be small and docile, as Dorothy will be carrying them around the stage for most of the show.

Aunt Em/ Glinda Femme, 30s - 50s, vocal range: G3-C5

  • Aunt Em: Dorothy's aunt and guardian, a farmer who lives in Kansas. Stoic, yet caring, a hard worker with a strong moral compass.
  • Glinda: The Good Witch of the North. A protective fairy godmother who is optimistic and cheerful.

Uncle Henry/ OZ Guard Masc, 30s-50s, vocal range: Bb2-Eb4

  • Uncle Henry: Dorothy's uncle who is a stoic farmer, yet kind and fair. He is proud, with a wry sense of humor.
  • OZ Guard: The Wizard's official guard, who seems initially put-upon and tough, becomes exuberant and welcoming. Takes his job very seriously.

Although written to pair with Uncle Henry, these roles may be split between two actors.

Hunk/ Scarecrow Masc, 20s -40s, vocal range: Bb2-F#4 (opt. Ab4)

  • Hunk: A know-it-all farmhand who has moments of being a clumsy jokester.
  • The Scarecrow: Dorothy's first friend in OZ. He's silly but loyal. Creative physicality and strong comic timing are a must. Tumbling is a plus but not required.

Hickory Masc, 20s/-40s, vocal range: Bb2-G4

  • Hickory: A friendly farmhand who seems insensitive at times.
  • The Tin Man: Dorothy's second friend in Oz. A hopeless romantic who is polite and gentlemanly. This role requires strong movement ability and extensive makeup.

 Zeke/ Lion Masc, 20s-40s, vocal range: Bb2-F4

  • Zeke: A big talker but a softie of a farmhand who seems tough but frightens easily and readily obeys orders.
  • The Cowardly Lion: Dorothy's third friend in Oz. An endearing animal with self-esteem issues. He puts on a masculine front but is a lover, not a fighter. Strong physicality and comic timing are a must. This role will require extensive makeup.

Miss Gulch/ The Wicked Witch Masc or Femme 30s-50's

  • Miss Gulch: Local spinster and busybody who is prudish and sharp with a sarcastic wit. She has money and is used to being respected and unchallenged. She seeks to punish Dorothy and hurt Toto.
  • The Wicked Witch: Vengeful, mean, and green. She is angry and ruthless in her attempt to hurt Dorothy and steal back the ruby slippers. Strong stage presence and physical and emotional life are a must. This role will require extensive makeup.

 Professor Marvel/ The Wizard Masc, 40s - 60s

  • Professor Marvel: A loveable con man and fortune teller. He is a bumbling grandfather type with a good heart and a jolly sense of humor.
  • The Wizard: A regular man behind a big charade. He uses theatricality to fool the people of Oz.  Educated, resourceful, and quick-witted. There should be a stark contrast between the "powerful wizard" persona and the everyday "man behind the curtain." This is a non-singing role.

Ensemble Roles:

The Munchkins: The exuberant inhabitants of Munchkinland, who are full of joy and wonder at being set free from the Wicked Witch of the East. All ages will be performing as munchkins. Specific singing roles may be given to children.

Singing roles include:

  • The Mayor - Declamatory and pompous
  • The Coroner - Scientific and sure of themself
  • The Barrister - Nitpicky
  • City Fathers - Official
  • Lollipop Guild - Industrious and tough
  • Lullaby League - Sweet and serene
  • Braggart, Fiddler, School Teachers

The Ozian Ensemble: Citizens of the bustling Emerald City. Fast-paced, sophisticated, and exciting, the Ozians welcome Dorothy and her friends before they meet The Wizard.

Singing roles include:

  • Beauticians, Polishers, and Manicurists: Bright, helpful, and efficient while making over Dorothy and her friends
  • Ozians: Confused and scared of the Witch's message in the sky
  • The Winkies: The guards at the Wicked Witch's palace. Stoic, orderly, and dim-witted.

Speaking roles include:

  • Winkie General: Matter-of-fact
  • The King of the Jitterbugs: Jocular, a mischief maker, a great dancer, and a loud whistler.
  • The Flying Monkeys: The Witch's helpers who kidnap Dorothy and rattle her friends. Strong physicalizations required.
  • Nikko, Commander of the Monkeys: The Witch's collaborator, who speaks in gibberish.
  • The Jitterbugs: Sent by The Witch to dance Dorothy and her friends into a frenzy. There are ensemble roles for all ages.
