EXCLUSIVE TO SCHOOLS IN DERBY, ASHFIELD and MANSFIELD

Following EEF’s Improving Literacy in Secondary Schools Guidance Report, the sessions will focus on the critical themes around: assessing reading fluency and implementing interventions; explicit teaching of vocabulary and oracy across the curriculum; creating a ‘love of reading’ culture.

Audience: Any passionate practitioners looking to improve disciplinary reading, oracy and writing with a desire to anchor their teaching practice into research and evidence

Overview of Training Materials: Schools will receive the following materials as training videos, powerpoints and associated support resources as a google drive folder - schools will be able to download all the materials for use in their settings


Core Modules:

- Launch date: 6th June 30 minute introduction to course and key content/materials

- Session 1: What is Disciplinary Literacy (10th June)
This session dives into the evidence base around disciplinary literacy and the teaching demands across various subject domains. This session will give an overview of the u reading challenges students experience at KS3 and KS4 as they journey through the curriculum in all subjects including the necessity for subject-specific support.

- Session 2: Oracy and Accountable Talk (20th June)
In this session, we will explore how to explicitly teach Oracy and offer high quality, accountable talk strategies in order to support access and achievement in reading and writing for all subject disciplines. This session will challenge the assumptions we may make about the impact talk has on literacy and future aspirations.

- Online Drop in session - 24th June 3.30pm - 4.30pm

- Session 3 : Vocabulary (27th June)
This session dives into the evidence base around effective vocabulary teaching across all subject domains. There will be a mix of theory and practical approaches including a variety of case studies from schools within the locality sharing their good practice.  

- Session 4: Accessing Academic Reading Texts (4th July)
This session will develop an understanding of the complexity of reading with practical strategies to support effectively teaching it across all subject areas, including breaking down the metacognitive cycle and offering targeted academic support informed by a diagnostic framework.

- Session 5: Breaking Down complex academic writing (11th July)
This session will develop an understanding of the complexity of writing with practical strategies to support effectively teaching it across all subject areas, including breaking writing down into the metacognitive cycle and offering targeted academic support informed by a diagnostic framework.

- Online Drop in Session: 18th July 3.30pm - 4.30pm
