You’re invited to this exciting webinar where will explore how to encourage engagement, inclusion and diversity in STE(A)M. This webinar will include discussion, from experience, of successful strategies that promoted value, capability and participation by female students from both Primary and Secondary stages of schooling.  

Your presenters are Daniel Brown and Talia Hoffman.

DANIEL BROWN is a Digital Learning Leader (K-12) at an all-girls school, Pymble Ladies College, in Sydney. Previously a Primary School teacher he started his journey into promoting STEM in 2015, where, with a colleague, he started the Junior School STEM games competition. From there, STEM has been a key driver of his contributions to the College across K-12.

Throughout the years he has learned from mistakes, celebrated successes and has learned so much ‘on-the-job’. As Daniels has said, "For our girls, rolling up their sleeves, picking up tools, wiring circuits, coding robots and solving engineering problems is their normal".

In this presentation, Daniel will outline successful initiatives he's taken and why they were successful, with key learnings on engaging girls in STEM and what his school's next steps are from both a Junior and Senior school perspective.

On his journey he has learned the importance of engaging girls in primary school and ways to overcome some of the difficulties in promoting STEM subjects for senior students who have had very little opportunity to engage with the STEM space in their formative years.

With hope, after this session you will have some take-away tips, examples of successful initiatives and ideas on engaging girls in STEM across K-12.

TALIA HOFFMAN is currently the Assistant Head of Science at Moriah College, a co-educational Modern Orthodox Jewish day school.

She has previously worked as a coordinator for Engineers Without Borders, an international NGO, where she wrote and co-managed STEM education projects for communities’ self-determined needs.

In her current position, Talia has experience as a STEM Elective coordinator, HSC Science Extension and Junior Science teacher. Throughout her career Talia has been invited to share her expertise at several conferences including “Programming for Differentiation in Science” and “Creativity and innovation in Teaching and Learning: methods for Project Based Learning in STEM”.

Talia prides herself on practice which is focused on differentiated inquiry-based learning that celebrates student diversity. In this presentation, she will explore “ready to use” pedagogic strategies that support gender inclusivity in STEM learning.

Participants will gain practical tips (and handy scaffolds!) that support girls and young women to: develop a self-determined approach to learning, explore methods of cooperative innovation in STEM, and dare to be experimental in their learning.
