IHSS Programmes

As part of the ongoing development of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty is funding and supporting 4 Research Programmes to bring together researchers across IHSS and beyond.

· Digital Lives (Humanising the Digital)

· Environmental Futures (Climate Change as Socio-cultural Phenomenon)

· Rethinking Work (Global and Local Ethnographies of Labour)

· Global Epistemologies (Taking Stock of New Cultural, Medical, Political, and Social Knowledges)

DIGITAL LIVES (Humanising the Digital) headed by Dr Philippa Williams. This programme will bring together inter/multi/transdisciplinary researchers and practitioners animated by the relationships between people, data and digital technologies. Recognising that the digital is produced through the social, potential themes include: digital bodies, digital aesthetics, digital finance, data lives and digital afterlives.

ENVIRONMENTAL FUTURES (Climate Change as Socio-cultural Phenomenon) headed by Dr Giulia Carabelli. Drawing on Natasha Myers’ call to learn to conspire with the plants to produce a more just future, this two-year programme of activities wishes to create a platform for scholars, activists, and cultural practitioners working with plants. The aim is to imagine how life in solidarity with plants might look like and what can we learn from plants to build a more just and equal future.

RETHINKING WORK (Global and Local Ethnographies of Labour) headed by Dr William Monteith. Work as we know it is changing. The ‘re-thinking work’ programme seeks to establish an interdisciplinary conversation on work and its futures from a variety of different geographical locations and theoretical perspectives. Key themes include illicit work, green work, reproductive work and post-work.

GLOBAL EPISTEMOLOGIES (Taking Stock of New Cultural, Medical, Political, and Social Knowledges) headed by Dr Mario Slugan. Global epistemologies programme seeks to take stock of various forms of local knowledge around the world in a range of domains (cultural heritage, healing, environment, etc.). The programme will pursue this through 1) a funding call (open to QMUL staff and PhDs to carry out own research), 2) series of conversations (exploring indigenous and non-anthropomorphic forms of knowledge and decolonising global cultural heritage), 3) and developing large-scale research grants (“Local Experiences of Early Cinema in the British Colonies” and “Colonialism in Highschool Education around the World”).
