Every year, Allen Neighborhood Center partners with the Michigan Community Service Commission and Youth Service America to host a large, youth focused volunteer event in Edible Park, our free-to-all community garden in Hunter Park. Last year, gathering fifty+ youth together physically wasn't possible, so we decided to partner with the Greater Lansing Food Bank Garden Project to find ways to still involve our community's youth in direct service to feed their neighbors.
And thus, the Grow-A-Row Commitment Drive was born!
The Greater Lansing Food Bank's Grow-a-Row program is a people-helping-people program to assist in feeding those in need in our own community through commitments to plant, grow and harvest an extra row of specific vegetables for local food banks and soup kitchens. Families and Individuals are asked to connect with their local food pantry directly, to ensure their produce will be able to be utilized, and is donated at the right time and place. This is a safe and impactful program to participate in during the COVID-19 pandemic. This project supports the continued development of a positive and lasting relationship between our community and its food pantries.
Allen Neighborhood Center is hoping to get at least fifty families and individuals to commit to participating. To facilitate this goal, we will donate up to fifty grow-a-row kits to participating gardeners- enough plants or seeds to plant a ten foot garden row. Kits will be distributed in late May or the beginning of June, through curbside pickup in Hunter Park.
If you're a home or community gardener (even if it's your first year!) and you'd like to commit to donating a portion of your harvest, please fill out this commitment form.
