SD Horse Trainer Survey
We firmly believe that training is the most important thing that any horse owner can invest in for a horse, and the best way to give them a chance to find homes and a good future.

Gentle Spirit Horses Rescue is looking to start a trainer's challenge in South Dakota similar to the Appalachian Trainer Face Off https://appalachiantrainerfaceoff.com/ . As a member of the SD horse community, we'd love to have your opinions and perspective as we work to develop this challenge. Thank you for taking the time to fill this out and please forward on to any trainer you know!

Your information will be kept private and unless you indicate you are interested in a training partnership or participating, you will not be contacted.

Your Name *
Are you a professional or amateur horse trainer? *
A professional is someone who earns a substantial amount of their income from training horses, has a clear history of equine training and a strong client base. See https://appalachiantrainerfaceoff.com/2018/05/08/the-appalachian-trainer-face-off-2018/ for a good idea of the difference between professional and amateur divisions.
Would you be interested in participating in a training challenge competition? *
What time of year would be best for you to participate in a training challenge? *
Would you be interested in participating in our pilot year, which is expected to be 2022? *
The first year of any program is hard to predict the results. Attendance at the event and adoption fees may be lower, however the first year is extremely important to get a new thing off the ground. We believe a trainer challenge is not only good for a rescue horse, but a good way to spread the word that good training is extremely important for any horse, not just a rescue horse.
What would you expect from the rescue? *
If your answer to the previous question was anything other than donating training, feed and farrier costs, please estimate the monthly fee that would be expected. *
Where would you be willing to travel to pick up your horse? *
Required
At the end of the training period (90-120 days), we would like to hold an event to showcase the horses and find adopters. Where would you prefer to have this event? Check all that apply. *
Required
What incentives would inspire you to participate? Check all that apply. *

Rescue horses often are good horses who found themselves in bad situations. They are often unhandled or have been unhandled for a few years; can be all ages and sizes. Please select all options below that you would be willing to work with. *

Marketing the horse during training has shown a significant increase in attendance at events and adoption fees (the highest at the AFO was $13,000 last year!). Are you willing to be an advocate for your horse? Check all you would be willing to do: *
Note: as with any new program, it may take time to build a large following and see an increase in fees. The pilot year we would realistically expect adoption fees to be lower.
Required
Sponsorships are very important for the success of an event like this. Sponsors for prizes, funds to rent the competition space and all associated costs, and any other costs are absolutely required. Check all that you would be willing to help with: *
Note: helping with sponsorships would NOT be a requirement of trainers.
Required
Most adopters are casual horse owners. As such, GSH has some preferred practices for training. Please select any of these training requirements that you would not agree to. *
Note: we are reasonable and will gladly discuss any recommended training methods as it relates to a particular horse. In general, however, these are principles we prescribe to.
Required
If you could nominate one South Dakota trainer to be a judge, who would it be? *
Even if not interested in participating in a challenge, would you consider a training partnership with the rescue from time to time? *
If yes, please describe what a training partnership would look like to you? IE, what are you willing to donate, how often, what kind of horses, what would you expect in return?
May we contact you with updates or for further questions? *
Thank you!!
Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey. Even if you aren't interested in participating, your input will help us build a trainer's challenge specific to the Dakotas!
