There will be a Varsity team and a JV team for the 2023-2024 season.
Varsity Team
The East Hockey Varsity team will be organized in accordance with other sports at East High School. Coaches will evaluate all players, via tryout, assessment, etc., and select varsity level players to play in varsity games. 

All East players (even if they were not originally selected for varsity) may have the opportunity to play in a varsity game if a spot needs to be filled during the season. 

- Sept through Feb
- minimum of 20 practices - full ice on *Wednesdays: ~8PM and every other *Friday: ~7AM at SLC Sports Complex (Steiner), combined with JV players. (*We are still waiting on final confirmation of these days/times.)
When games are scheduled on *Wednesdays, we will skip practice.
- 17 regular season games (Mon, Wed nights, and possibly other weeknights and weekend nights)
- 2 Playoff games guaranteed

Games are usually at county rinks (Steiner, Murray, Acord) but a few are at Bountiful, Ogden, Logan & Provo. Additional practice times may be scheduled as ice becomes available at various county rinks. Players are responsible for their own transportation to and from rinks.

Players may need to travel to Vernal this year (overnight) on a weekend. 
Junior Varsity Team
Any freshman and any non-tiered sophomore or junior is eligible to play in junior varsity games. Varsity players may have the opportunity to play in a junior varsity game if a spot needs to be filled during the season. 

Some players will play on both junior varsity and varsity teams. The junior varsity team will focus on player development and equal play time.

- Sept through Feb

- 14 regular season games (scheduled on weeknights and weekends)
- No playoff games

Games may be scheduled at a wider-range of rinks, usually local, but could have a game anywhere (Logan to Vernal to Southern Utah). Additional practice times may be scheduled as ice becomes available at various county rinks. Players are responsible for their own transportation to and from rinks.

Players may need to travel to either Cedar City or Vernal this year (overnight) on a weekend. 
Format of Teams:
There are no guarantees which team your player will be assigned to. Please check the box to verify that you understand this.

Practices & Dryland
All players are expected to make every effort to attend every practice and dryland as well as team activities.

Practices will be on Wednesdays at the  Salt Lake City Sports Complex (Steiner). 
~8:00PM Dryland
~9:00PM Ice 

We also plan to hold a practice every other Friday morning at Steiner as well.

Cost
East Hockey Fee:
$600 (ice, referees, scorekeepers, team apparel item, use of pant cover and practice jersey for the season, end of year banquet for players, etc.)


Fee increase information:
County Ice Rinks have raised their ice rental fees over 40% from last year. Because of this, our costs for practices and team fees to UHSH have gone up significantly. (Last year we were able to subsidize the player fees because of fundraising efforts, but with an even higher rise in ice rental cost this year, we cannot afford to subsidize again.) 

 You can request to split your fee into two payments and there are scholarships and other individual opportunities to lower the cost of the fee. Please reach out to Gina Capps (eastleopardshockey@gmail.com) if you would like more details. 
Eligibility
NEW THIS YEAR

To play on the East Hockey Team:
Players must live in the East High School boundary (attend East High School full time, attend online school or attend home school).
OR
Players living outside of the East High School boundary must attend East High School full time.

UHSH requires proof of high school registration. (Players must provide this when registering with UHSH.) For those not attending East full time:
  • Home school and online students can show proof of address living in East boundaries.
  • For others, some exceptions may apply if attending some classes at SLCC, U of U, or online, but with the intent to graduate from East.
Eligibility for 2023-2024 School Year *
Parent Participation
Everyone on the East Hockey staff is a volunteer. It takes a lot of work to run the program and we ask that parents volunteer to help with penalty box, events (service project, team dinners, senior night, banquet), photography, bulletin board, etc. We will have signups available at the start of the year and will reach out to parents to help fill leadership roles as needed.

The seniors have selected a pull-over windbreaker, water resistant jacket for this year’s apparel item that is included with registration. Please use the size chart to determine sizing.

There will be an opportunity for players (and their friends and family) to purchase other East apparel at the beginning of the season.
