June 13-25, 2022, Sisters' Voices will gather for a workshop on Dido and Aeneas, an opera written in the late 1600's by Henry Purcell for the girls at the boarding school where he worked. The week will culminate with two performances of the work.
This week we welcome girls finishing 4th-8th grades. Because this camp will be two intense weeks that will ask a lot of participants musically, physically, and creatively, and because this project will require a great deal of focus, self motivation, and cooperation, I want to make sure the participants are truly interested and ready.
FAQ: Do we have to sing opera?
Well, this IS an opera. : ) The project does require singing, but no, you won't have to make your voice all wobbly! Opera was popular music in the Baroque period, like Broadway music is today, and this old music is still interesting and compelling and fun! This show has witches and sailors and Dido's courtiers. It's based on myth and will be a fun story to tell. The music is beautiful. Everyone will have multiple parts to play, and everyone will participate in the construction of the sets and costumes - we'll build the show from the ground up.
Parents, please have your singer, with help from you if she would like, fill out this application thoroughly. This application will be forwarded to me, and I will reach out to you and your singer about enrollment. Please note that there is no audition required, but all participants will need basic vocal skills (being able to sing along with a song on the radio is enough!). We are looking for girls who love to sing, who are interested in theater and story telling, and who want to make a contribution to this huge project. Singers who are unsure about whether they are a good fit for this camp are welcome to reach out to me to make an appointment to talk or sing! I'd love to meet you!
Singers will be matched with voice parts and solos on the first day of camp, based on what the leaders see and hear at the time. Singers are encouraged to come ready to do any of a number of parts. There are quite a few solos of different sizes, and the chorus is on stage through the entire show -- there is a lot to do, and everyone will matter a great deal.
Please do contact me with questions. I look forward to hearing from you!
