In Hawaiian culture, protocols are deeply rooted in respect, spirituality, and a profound connection to our ʻaina / land and kanaka / people. It is essential that we honor our Kanaka 'Ōiwi traditions and demonstrate respect for our culture, our land and our people. We invite everyone to learn more about Hawaiian culture and our protocols. We also believe that it is the kuleana / responsibility of all who live in Hawaiʻi (not just Kanaka 'Ōiwi) to engage in protocols, when appropriate.
What is the purpose of the form?
This intake form is intended to help engage in respectful and meaningful cultural protocols for the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu community. Please submit your request a minimum of (3) weeks in advance. We will respond within 1- week of your initial request.
What to expect if we can fulfill your request?
If we can fulfill your request, we will meet to consult with you for no longer than 1-hour on what cultural protocol is appropriate and needed for your event. This initial consultation will help us understand your specific requirements and ensure respectful and accurate representation. Depending on the type of ceremony and its complexity, additional meetings or training sessions (such as a refresher of Mele Honouliuli) may be required to fully prepare participants and uphold the cultural integrity of the protocol for the event. We will work closely with you to coordinate any further steps necessary.
Expectation on your intention and participation for a meaningful and appropriate protocol
The request for protocol is a request to set an intention and put mana/ energy into your event. If you are not participating in the protocol, please kindly consider a ho'okupu / offering of a lei for all those who provide the protocol. There are many free and inexpensive ways to make lei for those who offer protocol. Setting aside this time would be an important opportunity for you to set your intention and put your mana into your event.
Who made this form?
