Young and emerging leaders across Canada are organizing and pushing for positive change. 

The goal of the Broadbent Institute’s Emerging Leaders Program is to provide young leaders working for systemic change with hands-on training and ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities to increase their skills and capacity around progressive policies and projects.

The Emerging Leaders program is a nine-month program with the inaugural cohort beginning March 2023. The cohort will be provided in-depth training from industry experts, ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities, and an invitation to the 2023 Progress Summit and 2023 Broadbent Gala. 

Program Overview

The Broadbent Institute’s Emerging Leaders Program will bring together 15-20 young, community-minded leaders from across Canada who are committed to a more just, inclusive, green and equitable society and who are actively working for positive change in their communities.

The Emerging Leaders will be exposed to existing best practices at the 2023 Progress Summit and also participate in specialized training through an in-depth all-day leadership workshop where they will be provided with hands-on tools to further develop their leadership skills and networks. Emerging Leaders will be provided with ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities by the Broadbent Institute throughout the year, including attendance at the 2023 Progress Summit and the 2023 Broadbent Gala.

Skill development will include but not be limited to: 

  • Effective team leadership and communication skills
  • Successful methods for organizing advocacy campaigns 
  • Business management, including budgeting and banking
  • Government relations, both as insider and outsider 
  • How to engage effectively with stakeholders, consult and build consensus in communities 
  • Digital, social and traditional media best practices for communicating ideas and fostering public interest and support 

In-person attendance at the 2023 Progress Summit in Ottawa from March 8 - 10, 2023, is mandatory for selected applicants. At this point, the program is offered in English only.

Note: Participation includes travel, accommodation and meals

Application deadline: 11:59 PM PST, February 13, 2023  Welcome session: February 2023 (Virtual) Training and attendance at the 2023 Progress Summit (All expenses paid): March 8 - 10 2023  Mentorship and Networking: April 2023 - September 2023 Training and attendance at the 2023 Broadbent Gala (All expenses paid): November 2023

At this time, in-person attendance at the 2023 Progress Summit in Ottawa from March 8 - 10 2023 is mandatory for selected applicants as the specialized training session will take place at the summit.
