Lab Extravaganza
Event Tuesday November 12th - Student Registration Form. Please complete before 11:59pm on Friday, November 8th.

Disclaimer:
We will announce placements the morning of the event. We CANNOT switch students; we understand that you want to be with your friends but we have to place all students from all schools equally.

You will have one lab in the morning and one in the afternoon - they will not be the same lab.
- We have provided the "What labs are you definitely not interested in?", we will try to avoid placing you in this lab but there's no guarantee. Please only pick 3.

***Do NOT choose the same activity for your first - fourth choices. If you choose biology four times and the biology lab becomes full, we will not know what your next preference is and we will randomly place you in a lab**

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS

Biology - Heredity in Drosophila melanogaster
What do you get when you cross two fruit flies that heterozygous for both body colour and wing shape? I know…..and you will know after you sign up for this lab.
You will long pants and close toed shoes for this lab.

Chemistry - Chromatography
Learn how we separate mixtures in chemistry based on polarity. You will long pants and close toed shoes for this lab.

Physics - Pendulum for Pros
Ever wonder what it’s like to be an experimental physicist? Come experience the kind of processes
used by real scientists in the physics lab! You will use a pendulum experiment as an opportunity to take
real data, do an analysis, get a result and then use that result in your next experiment which you will
design yourself. In the physics lab, YOU are in charge, so make sure you can justify all your choices.
This activity is a shortened version of one of the units from the introductory physics lab course offered
here at UNB.

Earth Sciences 1 - Physical mineralogy
Learn about the physical properties involved in the study of minerals!

Earth Sciences 2 - Optical mineralogy
Learn about the optical properties involved in the study of minerals, along with the technique used to observe minerals within rocks.

Kinesiology - Human Movement
In the Cardiometabolic, Exercise and Lifestyle Lab students will learn and experience the methods we use to understand human movement, measure body composition, and evaluate fitness in people ranging from older adults to elite athletes. Additionally, they will get the chance to see our brand new facility, including our own exercise space and blood analysis lab!
You will long pants and close toed shoes for this lab.
You can bring gym clothing with you if you would like to try out a few of the exercise tests/assessments, but this is not mandatory.

Electrical Engineering - Electromagnets
Investigate forces experienced by current carrying conductors within a magnet field. Each group will construct a speaker from a Styrofoam plate and use it to listen to music.

Nursing - First year nursing lab
During your visit to the Faculty of Nursing we will demonstrate the use of Simulation Mannequins that are used within the Nursing program. You will have the opportunity to listen to lung sounds and find pulses on the mannequins. You will have the opportunity to use a hand held Doppler to listen to the blood flow in your own foot and you will also have an opportunity to complete a hand hygiene activity

Physiology - Blood Pressure
Ever had your blood pressure taken before? Do you know what the numbers mean? This lab will involve you taking your own blood pressure both traditionally and electronically and then learning about the various levels of blood pressure during rest, exercise, and recovery!
