This course is available as an online course and includes the modules on Academic Integrity (2 EC), Methodology (2 EC) and Proposal Writing (2 EC). It lets you reflect on how to conduct research on PhD level and what is necessary to make your particular research project a success.

Normally, this course is taken as a whole, but it will be possible to receive an exemption for part of the course. This all depends on the arrangements made in your Training and Supervision Plan (TSP), and the requirements for your particular project.

Course contents and schedule

1. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY (semester 1: September-December/ semester 2: February-April)

Part 1.1: Canvas Module Getting Acquainted

Part 1.2: Canvas Module Academic Integrity, Procrastination & Good work

Part 1.3: Online course Epigeum (research integrity in humanities, first edition).
You will receive an invitation to join this course via e-mail (please, check your spam as well); don’t sign up for the course yourself!

Part 1.4: Canvas Module Writing a Data Management Plan

2. METHODOLOGY (semester 1: November-December/semester 2: April)

Canvas Module Methodology. For this module, you make a number of assignments that concern a methodological assessment tailored to the topic of your dissertation.

3. RESEARCH PROPOSAL (semester 1: December-January/semester 2: May-June)

Canvas Module Research Proposal:

Part 3.1: You write a draft of your Research Proposal and upload it on Canvas before the deadline.

Part 3.2: based on the criteria for the assessment of PhD research proposals, you assess the proposals of your peers before the deadline.

Part 3.3: After elaborating on the comments of your peers, and after discussing your proposal with your supervisor(s), you submit the final draft of your research proposal to the coordinator of the course before the deadline.

4. OTHER COURSES
(There is no due date, you can return to them whenever you wish, also after the end of this course)

Part 4.1: Canvas Module Literature research, navigating your field, referencing & enlarging your public

Part 4.2: Canvas Module research question(s) and/or problem + the state of research

Part 4.3: Canvas Module Argumentation & other research skills

Part 4.4: RECAP TRAJECTORY. This Research Design course is also for those of you who are (almost) at the end of their PhD-journey and would like to have a RECAP of Academic Skills.
