Best Interest of the West Moberly Child

Background

West Moberly First Nation is pursuing jurisdiction and self-determination under The Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children, youth, and families (C92). C92 establishes national standards for the Best Interest of the Child (BIOC), however, these are only the minimum standards. BIOC includes child well-being, safety, and preserving the child's cultural identity. First Nations can go a step further and their own culturally specific BIOC principles and add relevant, Nation-defined guidance on how they are applied.

What is the purpose of survey?

We must work together to create the Best Interests of the West Moberly Child principles. This means hearing from WMFN Elders, families, members, leadership, and staff. These core values, principles, and traditions form the foundation of the West Moberly First Nations Child and Family Services Act

Where did survey questions come from?

The survey questions are based on feedback we received from workshops, interviews, focus groups, and previous surveys with WMFN Elders, members, leadership, and staff. The survey questions are intended to reflect what we have heard so far and allow WMFN members to confirm we are on track.

What should I know before I start?

This anonymous survey is structured according to Dr. Martin Brokenleg's childhood development framework. Having found alignment among consulted members, we adopted it as a foundational framework and subsequently customized it to better align with the values and principles of WMFN.
