TERM 1- Intro to Literature and Composition ages 11 - 14, Time: 11 am - 12 pm 8 weeks starting 18/2
This class is intended for those would typically by working at a years 8 - 10 level if at school, approximately 11 - 14 years. Students should be able to read, write and interact with others in the class at this level. Students should be comfortable sitting and writing at least 1 paragraph independently as a weekly homework task will be required to practice what is learned in class which may involve 1 - 2 paragraphs of writing per week.

The intention of this class is to extend student's writing skills further to help them express themselves with more clarity and eloquence through different styles of writing. In this class, we will be looking at language features, word usage, sentence and paragraph structure and studying literature which exemplifies these things. This will include creative and formal writing but the focus will be more on the technical aspects of style and structure in writing. Students will also work towards longer pieces of writing such as essays and personal responses and maybe even speeches.

As part of this, we will look at examples of writing in literature and studying different styles of writing from these examples before applying the learned writing techniques and strategies to our own writing. This will involve studying a highly regarded novel in-depth to explore the themes and ideas explored in the novel and the language features and other techniques used to convey these.

Our first study novel will be the book: The Silver Sword by Ian Serrallier. Students will need access to a copy of this book. You can find out more about the book here: https://www.gradesaver.com/the-silver-sword
