Black Birders Hike - June 5 - 8AM
Black Birders Week will take place May 31-June 5th. This now-annual event addresses the challenges black birdwatchers face, including underrepresentation in the field and racism. This movement is meant to be a springboard to shape a more diverse future for birding, conservation, and the natural sciences. This guided hike is open to beginners and binoculars will be available to borrow.
Matthew Morgan is an Environmental Educator in Charlotte. Matthew has always had a love for wildlife but wasn’t raised around nature growing up in Atlanta, GA. His initial fascination with nature came from watching nature documentaries and television shows. He got interested in birding during his senior year of college. After graduation, he noticed that he could remember all of the calls of the birds he learned in school. He’s gained more experience in the years since and is now leading bird walks professionally and personally. He’s truly excited to lead one for #Blackbirdersweek.
Riverfront Park opened in 1983 on land where the original waterworks for the City of Columbia was situated. This was also the site of the world's first electrically operated textile mill, and the hydroelectric plant, the oldest one in the state, is still operating. The park, which separates the Historic Columbia Canal and the Congaree River, is approximately 167 acres.
