Research Information:
The purpose of this research study is to understand how trainees and early career researchers use population descriptors in their research. You are being asked to take part in a research study because you have identified yourself an early career researcher or trainee studying human genetics and working with the computational analysis of population level data.
Participation in the research study is voluntary. You can agree to join or not. You can also say yes now and change your mind later. Deciding not to be in the research study, now or later, will not affect your ability to receive medical care at Mount Sinai.
If you choose to take part, you will be asked to complete a short anonymous survey that should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Your participation in this research study is expected to last only for this survey. We will not collect your e-mail address nor attempt to recontact you. There are 100 people expected to take part in this research study.
You can decide to skip any question you do not wish to answer. You can also choose to stop taking the survey at any time. You must be at least 18 years old to participate. If you are younger than 18 years old, please stop now.
The possible risks to you in taking part in this research are:
- Discussion on topics such as race, ethnicity, identity, and ancestry may be uncomfortable and sensitive for some participants
- Potential loss of confidentiality of data: Risk of loss of private information; this risk always exists, but the study will not collect identifiable or private health information
The possible benefits to you for taking part in this research are:
- Increased awareness of population descriptors in human genetics research
To protect your identity as a research subject, no identifiable information will be collected.
The anonymous data collected from this survey will be made publicly available upon completion of the project for future use.
If you have any questions about this research, please contact the Lead Researcher at +1-332-243-7138 or christa.caggiano@mssm.edu You can also call the Program for the Protection of Human Subjects Office at (212) 824-8200.
Study design: The study should take you about 15 minutes to complete. The questions are organized in 5 sections:
- Screening
- Views and Knowledge of Population Descriptors
- Subjective Perception of NASEM report
- Recommendations
- Demographics and Research Background
