Response from the Hong Kong University Students’ Union
regarding the Statement of the University

Established on 6 October 1912, the Hong Kong University Students' Union (“the Union”) has been committed to serving students and promoting communication and cooperation with the University for over a century. Today, she has grown into an organisation with over a hundred sub-organisations, enabling students to flourish in academic, cultural, sports and other areas.

Since her establishment, the Union has shared the pride of the University and has committed to the principles of collegiality. The Union, despite being an independent organisation, has maintained intimate cooperation with the University on equal footing. Even though there were instances where the Union did not see eye to eye with the University management, we have always worked together striving for the welfare of students and the good governance of the University, upholding the principle of teacher-student co-governance. Through co-governance, colleagues of the University at all levels were not only teachers but also mentors and peers to students. Together, they have committed to the centennial foundation of the University.

Ceasing to assist the Union in collecting membership fees and claiming the management rights over the Students' Union premises, the University now draws a clear line of demarcation with the Union unilaterally without any prior notice. The statement issued by the University has buried decades of hard work by our predecessors, teachers and students. We hereby express our deepest regret as the act of the University would have a far-reaching impact on the operation of the Union and her sub-organisations. This act has severely undermined the interests of students.

As the only students’ organisation representing and serving all undergraduate students in the University, the Union urges the University to maintain our valuable corporations and reconsider thoroughly its contentious decisions. The relationship between the Union and the University is not a zero-sum game. Both sides can be winners if the University can uphold genuine communication and cooperation with the Union, especially during difficult times Hong Kong now has to face.

In these troubled times, the Union sincerely calls for the support and attention to this matter from our fellow schoolmates, in a bid to secure the very last piece of students’ autonomy in Hong Kong. The Union pledges to spare no efforts in maintaining our operations and defending our common interests. We are asking our affiliated sub-organisations and students to remain steadfast. The Union shall withstand the challenge ahead with all hands on deck. United, we stand.
