The first lesson is an orientation for HUMANS ONLY and will take about an hour. PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG TO THE FIRST LESSON. *
Required
After orientation, the remaining lessons will take 30 to 45 minutes each, depending on how quickly the dogs and their handlers learn. Lessons will be held on the outdoor walking trail at the shelter. *
Required
This course will consist of a total of six consecutive lessons that meet on Saturday mornings at Paws and Claws. These lessons will meet Sept. 10, 17, and 24 and Oct. 1, 8, and 15. Missed classes will severely compromise your ability to learn the material we are covering in class and will slow your dog's progress. Please plan accordingly. *
Required
This course costs $30, payable to Paws and Claws before the first lesson. Because slots are limited, this fee is non-refundable. (We will waive the fee if you are a Paws and Claws volunteer or if you are training a dog adopted from Paws and Claws.) If you do not own a collar and leash suitable for training, you will need to purchase them at some point between orientation and your dog's first lesson. The equipment we use is typically available at Tractor Supply; collars cost around $12 to $15, and our trainer's preferred leash is $14. The trainer will show you the necessary equipment during orientation. (To avoid wasting money on things you don't need or won't be able to use, please do not purchase any new equipment until you have attended orientation.) *

Sometimes people come to class with unrealistic expectations. All dogs learn best with patience and consistent practice. Most dogs, given a few minutes of focused, daily practice with a patient owner, can learn the basic leash commands -- heel, sit, stay, and recall -- in three to four weeks, and many learn additional commands or begin working off-leash within this time frame. Some dogs require more time or a different approach because of past trauma or other issues. Our trainer will work with you to determine the best way to help your dog. Please read each statement and check the box to indicate that you understand what is involved in obedience training. *
Required
Which behavior issues apply to your dog? *
Required
If you checked either of the boxes related to aggression in the previous question, please describe your dog's behavior and triggers (e.g., "Scout snarls at strange dogs," or "Fionn snaps at women who try to touch him.")
Do you or your dog have any special needs that may require accommodations? (Please include any physical disabilities, sensory processing issues, phobias, etc. that may affect class -- e.g., "My dog is blind," "I had a stroke recently and have trouble using my left hand," "My dog is afraid of trash bags," etc.)
The trainer has two important rules to keep everybody safe. Please check the box to indicate that you have read and agree to each of these items as a condition of participating in class: *
Required
Did you adopt your dog from Paws and Claws? (If the dog you will be training was adopted from P&C, we will waive the fee for the class.) *
Are you a Paws and Claws volunteer? (If you are a volunteer, we will waive the fee for the class.) *
Do you have any questions/concerns for the trainer?
