Vocabulary Learning Tip

Many words have more than one meaning.

When you come across an unfamiliar word in your reading, look up the word in your dictionary.

If the word has multiple meanings, use context clues-words and phrases around the word-to figure out which meaning fits.

Word Meaning

Choose the definition that reflects how the word is used in the reading. Use the paragraph number in parentheses to locate and reread the word in context.

1. gripped (1) *

a. deeply engaged, interested

b. strongly affected by something

2. absorbed (1) *

a. very interested in something, often to the point of not noticing other things happening around you

b. when light, heat, or energy is taken in and kept, not reflected

3. fiercely (1) *

a. energetically and with strong feelings

b. angrily or in a frightening or attacking manner

4. ache (3) *

a. to feel a continuous but not very sharp pain in a part of your body

b. to want to do or have something very much

5. explode (3) *

a. to burst into small pieces, making a loud noise and causing damage

b. to suddenly increase greatly in number, amount, or degree

6. overcome (3) *

a. able to successfully control a feeling or problem that would prevent you from achieving something

b. unable to act or think in the usual way

7. intellectual (4) *

a. a person who is well educated and interested in serious ideas

b. needing serious thought in order to be understood

8. drift (4) *

a. to move slowly on water or in the air

b. to move, change, or do something without any plan or purpose

9. confront (5) *

a. to deal with something very difficult or unpleasant in a brave and determined way

b. to face someone in a threatening way, as though you are going to attack the person

10. tension (5) *

a. a nervous feeling that makes it impossible to relax

b. the difference between the needs or influences of two things, which causes problems

11. fulfillment (5) *

a. the feeling of being happy and satisfied with your life because you are doing interesting, useful, or important things

b. the act of doing something that you promised or agreed to do

12. motivation (7) *

a. an eagerness and willingness to do something without needing to be told or forced

b. the reason why you want to do something
