“Let’s Learn About…” AUDIOLOGY
A Massachusetts RID Collaboration Project with Connecticut RID.

THE CONCEPT: The “Let’s Learn About...” series came from a belief that interpreters have
extensive knowledge of interpreting, and yet we enter legal, medical, psychological, addiction, vocational, educational, religious, and cultural worlds every day often without extensive knowledge of that topic.  If we focus on learning more about a particular field we can improve our understanding of it and, therefore, our interpretation.  The goal of this series is to increase our English and ASL vocabulary, common acronyms and concepts, priorities of participants, etc. for the fields in which we work.

THE TOPIC: This workshop will focus on the field of audiology. Learn from the unique perspective of Sarah Sparks (AuD) who has been both a consumer and provider in audiology appointments.  The workshop will describe three different types of appointments audiologists have - diagnostic, hearing aid, and cochlear implant. Participants will learn about the different goals, tests, and equipment used in each type of appointment. The last 30 minutes will be reserved for Q & A.

SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Sparks is a deaf clinical audiologist based in Washington, DC. She is the founder and owner of Audiology Outside the Box, an ASL-English bilingual telepractice focusing on audiologic counseling and (re)habilitation. Additionally, she provides in-person diagnostic, hearing aid, and cochlear implant services at Gallaudet University Hearing and Speech Center. Her favorite part of her job is working with deaf and hard of hearing signers, especially children and their families.
