SIGN-UP: Request to access Autodesk CAD, RobotC, PLTW SW via Virtual Machines
Hi,
If you're a manufacturing / engineering teacher in California and use CAD software - read on and fill out the survey to show your interest on getting access to the software using virtual machines (and please FORWARD on to other teachers that might be interested). To date, I’ve been focusing on Autodesk products (RevIt, Fusion, Inventor / CAM, AutoCAD), but am trying to work on others as well (RobotC, PLTW, etc.).

As you might know, most CAD software doesn’t run on Chromebooks (or older computers). And since a large number of students only have these, I've been working on ways to get students access to software using "virtual machines" (VM's). This means they can use their Chromebooks and older machines to run the software.

I have a couple of different options you can use, both are free.

1) NetLab server farm (at Cabrillo College). You can get access to this quickly, but it has limited capacity (meaning you can't have all your students sign on at the same time), and students have to transfer files back and forth using Google Drive, Dropbox, or some other cloud service. One nice aspect of this, though, is there is some tracking of how often students long-on and for how long. Currently only has access to Autodesk SW.

2) Amazon Web Services. Requires your IT department to get involved to set up access through Google. However, unlimited capacity, and students can easily save files to/from their Google Drive. Access to Autodesk SW, RobotC for Vex, some PLTW software.

Sign up to show your interest and we'll get back to you with directions on how to get access.

We might need to contact your IT administrator to have them set something up on your school servers so students can get access. It's pretty simple for them to do.
