Application for Listening Volunteers: 2023-2024
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Bristol Nightline!

Nightline is a confidential, non-advisory, non-judgemental, non-directive, non-assumptive listening service. We look for good listeners who are empathetic, open-minded and would fit well into our supportive community.

Before we can invite you to volunteer training, we ask that you fill out this application form. The application is confidential and its information will stay private and only be reviewed by our training team. The form will help us find out a bit more about you and why you want to volunteer with us. Once your application has been reviewed, we will be in contact with you for the next steps.

Before applying, please make sure you have read through the listening volunteer role description here.

Please be aware that successful applicants must be able to attend ALL of our training sessions if they would like to volunteer with us. The training sessions will be on the following dates:
- One online evening on Tuesday 28th May (6.30pm-8.30pm)
- Weekend whole-day sessions on the 1st AND 2nd of June 10am - 4pm (latest) IN-PERSON

In addition to this you will be provided with some compulsory pre-reading materials to help prepare you for training.

Please take time to fill out this form. The deadline for applications is the 24th of May 2024. However, successful applicants will be offered a place at training on a first-come-first-serve basis, we have a limited number of spaces available.

We CANNOT accept applications from final year students in their last semester, due to the time it takes to train. Likewise, we regret that we are not able to take on volunteers who are studying at Bristol University for only one semester.

Note: All your personal details are stored securely by Bristol Nightline according to GDPR guidelines. Completed application forms will be deleted from our system within 6 weeks of finishing the training process.

Why do you want to volunteer with Bristol Nightline? *
Please tell us more about yourself and what motivates you to want this role.
Have you been criminally convicted in the past? *
A criminal conviction does not necessarily mean you cannot volunteer with us, however, as Nightline deals with vulnerable people, a check may be carried out to determine eligibility to volunteer, as per legal requirements.

A criminal conviction  applies to all convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings. This includes minor misdemeanours, such as: spent sentences, cautions, and any matters currently under investigation.
Throughout training we will be in contact with you directly through a WhatsApp group chat. This will be our main method of communication, as well as via email.

Please provide your telephone number below. It will be kept confidential and it will not be made public.

As part of training, we require that you take part in a 2-hour online session where we introduce you to Nightline, our core values etc... Required
As part of training, there is some pre-reading you will need to complete before coming to our in-person training sessions at the weekend. Are you able to commit 20-30 minutes of time to carefully read through the information provided? *
Required
In order to be a listening volunteer, we require that you partake in training, which consists of an online evening session followed by 2 in-person whole-day sessions on the weekend ( 1st AND 2nd of June 10am - 4pm). All sessions must be attended - is this something you will be able to commit to? *
If you are unable to attend these dates, we are able to put you on a waiting list, however there is no guarantee you will be trained this year and may need to submit another application.
While the phone line is open, will you be able to commit to doing a phone shift (8pm-8am) once every 3 weeks in term time? *
It is really important that all our volunteers are able to regularly do shifts in order to keep the service running. Note: We do not expect you to stay awake for the entire 12 hour shift! Shifts take place in a cosy flat with beds, a sofa, a toilet and a kitchen. When not taking calls you are free to sit and do work/chat/sleep/watch Netflix etc.
Why do you believe you are suited to this role? *
Please tell us what you hope to achieve with this volunteering position, more about your aims and why you think you would be suitable for this role.
Have you ever had a difficult conversation with someone? *
Try to think of a situation that you are comfortable sharing about a difficult topic or where you had a difficult conversation. How did you feel talking to the person? What did you do during the conversation? How did you cope after the conversation?
Once you have received your training, we love volunteers to help with future training sessions. Is this something you would be interested in? *
Would you be willing to commit at least 1 hour to help the team publicise for Nightline for the year? *
Are you able to remain anonymous as a Bristol Nightline volunteer? *
Nightline is a confidential and anonymous service. As such, it is very important to us that our volunteers do not disclose to others outside the society that they volunteer with us, as this may put students off calling the service.
If you are taking a call, what tactics might you use to make the caller feel at ease? *
We will give you training on this so don't worry about getting it exactly right!
Shifts are done in pairs with one volunteer on the phone and one listening in. What might you do to support a volunteer who is taking a difficult call? *
Do you have any disability requirements you'd like us to know about? If so, what can we do to accommodate you?
Any other notes to support your application, or any questions, please write here! Feel free to leave blank. We hope to see you soon! :)
