Welcome to Olin Yoliztli

Olin Yoliztli, which in native language Náhuatl means life and movement, is a non-for-profit group carried out by a passionate group of people, promoting the culture of Mexico through dances and music. The purpose of the group is to create a community of people able to collectively share dances and music, organize events or participate in events contributing to create a vibrant environment in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

It is a calpulli, a Náhuatl word that refers to a community based group, autonomous and which offers something to their surrounding community. It began in June 2020 not only sharing different dances from Mexico but inviting people to get to know these traditions from their origin, the meaning they have in their original context, the language and worldview of the peoples to which they belong and the subtle values within.

Dance classes are offered weekly and as a dance team, we are constantly seeking to collaborate with many other groups like musicians or other dance groups. We also offer 3 introductory workshops throughout the year to help new participants that might be unfamiliar with these types of dances.

Amongst these people, we regularly organize our own events open for the community like “Day of the Dead” and a “Posada as a Christmas Celebration”. We also sometimes offer different craft workshops to establish communication and get involved with the community of Wellington. Since we are the organizers for these events, some extra time from us would be required in order to prepare them.

Apart from our performances, we are regularly involved in other events and festivals around the country which means we will have different activities through the whole year which might involve traveling and some extra rehearsals.

Olin Yoliztli is a non-profit organization that, like calpulli, has sustained itself thanks to the work and dedication of its members. The organization does not have the purpose of making a profit for a proprietor, member, or shareholder. The collected money from the attendants to dance classes or workshops and donations from the events we organize contribute to covering the costs involved in carrying out this work.

Thanks for your time and welcome!

Costumes

Over the last 2 years, we have been making a big effort to cover the costs of different costumes from Mexico, Bolivia and Chile in order to give something back to the communities that have preserved the traditions and dances we are sharing here in New Zealand.

We already have enough costumes for shared use and we will provide you the costumes and accessories for the performances. We kindly ask you to take care of them, please value the time of the people who make them, who spend time buying them and arranging delivery to NZ, and all the people that were part of the group in earlier days and contributed to make or bring all what we have now.

Please be aware that most of them can’t be replaced or bought here, the cost of all these items and specially freight costs, have been increasing drastically over the last years and we won’t be able to replace any of what we have for the same cost.

Dismissal

Olin Yoliztli maintains the right to dismiss any member who breaches any of the stated Term & Conditions, damages property or causes severe disruptions to any classes. This decision is at the discretion of the Group Directors.

We ensure that the dance activities we lead are of detriment to the health, safety and well-being of participants and we encourage participants to take active responsibility for their own welfare, behavior, relationships and actions with others, setting clearly appropriate personal boundaries to ensure the integrity of their relationships and participate safely and happily.
