Black girls in our community are faced with many adversities due to many structural disadvantages due that impact their social environments. Social emotional well-being is critical for our girls now more than ever because of the many challenges that they face.
As mothers and women who grew up in Winston-Salem, we understand very well the issues that impact our girls well-being. It truly takes a village to ensure access and opportunities for our girls and our families, and our community.
The GLAM Rites of Passage Program strives to be apart of this village. Because we understand that violence impacts our girls and is around every corner, the program was created to address this issue while providing windows of opportunity so that our girls and their mother's can experience their full potential.
What to Expect
The program is twelve weeks , beginning in April 2024.
It is designed for the girls to explore themselves, each other, and their community. They will participate in workshops and activities that cover topics such as:
- Mental and Physical Wellbeing
- Family Values & Honoring our Elders and Ancestors
- Community Care & Accountability
- Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship
- Interpersonal Violence Awareness & Advocacy
At the end of the Rites of Passage program the girls will have a ceremony with their mothers or other special identified women in their lives and will continue to meet once a month on Saturdays for service projects and entrepreneurship activities.
Mothers or identified special women in the girls lives are expected to participate in the program by encouraging their girls to honor the guidelines of the program and are welcome to come to sessions and special activities. We will also provide workshops of interest to mothers and identified special women in the girls lives monthly.
