GRAMMAR AND MECHANICS FOR TEST PREP: Do you need to brush up on your grammar before you begin ACT/SAT testing? This class is perfect for those who want to excel on the grammar portions of upcoming college-bound tests, compose and polish their high school and college-application essays, or simply improve their understanding of grammar and writing skills.

ACT vs. SAT: Are you a rising sophomore or junior and unsure about which test -- SAT or ACT -- is right for you? We can help you determine which test better suits your particular skill set. We'll overview each section, provide basic testing strategies for each, and practice selections from math, verbal, science and essay sections. At the end of the seminar, we'll administer a survey to help students determine which test they prefer. SAT VERBAL PREP: Are you taking your SAT at the end of August? This seminar will help you achieve your highest possible scores in Reading-Writing/Language and on the essay! During the course we'll help you review your past SAT or PSAT results and teach you strategies that work. We'll also review grammar and punctuation rules most tested on the SAT and provide you with essay patterns, as well as reasoning examples and a literary devices "bag of tricks" to use on your essay! SAT MATH PREP: Are you taking your SAT in the fall? This seminar will help you achieve your highest possible scores in math. You'll take a practice SAT from the College Board book and bring it with you to the seminar. We'll teach you the basic types of problems to expect on the test, and work with you on the problems that are challenging you. We'll also spend time showing you how to approach the more difficult math questions. And we'll present some strategies that will help you achieve the highest score possible on this SAT section! GET AHEAD! Math II: By taking this seminar, you'll learn the basic subjects of Math II and strengthen your abilities in these areas. We'll cover rational functions, complex numbers, and imaginary numbers and you'll enter Math II as a much more confident mathematician! We will review key mathematical concepts that you will encounter and have encountered in your math courses. By reviewing now, these concepts will be fresh for next fall so you can reach your goals in Math II. GET AHEAD! Math III: Math III PC can often present students with more challenging problem sets. By taking this seminar, you'll learn the basic subjects of Math III PC and strengthen your abilities in these areas graphically, numerically, and analytically. You'll enter Math III PC as a much more confident mathematician!

GET AHEAD! Strategies for Success in Biological Sciences: Are you interested in the natural and biological sciences? Do you want to learn how to conduct scientific research? Is there a topic you'd like to learn more about in the scientific field? Then this course is for you. We will learn how to use various online sources to search for and acquire primary literature, the source of our research knowledge. We'll also review a number of scientific papers and learn how to critically read and assess the material. These skills will provide a great jumpstart on skills that you will need in college and beyond.

GET AHEAD! CHEMISTRY: Chemistry is a fun and rewarding field of study, but many students get a bit lost along the way. In this seminar, we will prepare you to succeed in your chemistry course. We will begin by discussing basic concepts in chemistry such as the composition of matter, chemical vs. physical changes, dimensional analysis, stoichiometry, and the periodic table as well as a brief overview of topics that you will work with during the year. With this primer, you will be familiar with the basic concepts that you will learn during the year and will be prepared for your first experience with the amazing world of chemistry.

GET AHEAD! PRECALCULUS: Will you be taking pre-calculus next year? Would you like to be ahead of the class in the fall and carry your confidence in with you? A base is a powerful way to accomplish this task. In our course we will review concepts from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry that you will need to be familiar with to earn your highest score in pre-calculus

GET AHEAD! AP CALCULUS: Are you scared to take AP Calculus? Well, don’t be. During our course, we will approach AP Calculus concepts and problems graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally to see that AP Calculus can be undaunting - and dare I say FUN? You will come away with a firm foundation of calculus concepts to apply to your material and exams next year. (Note: We will run this seminar with 3 interested students)

GET AHEAD! AP PHYSICS: Are you taking AP Physics next year? Would you like to dive into the material before going back to school in August? In this course, we'll review all you need to know before entering AP Physics. We'll cover the basic concepts that will be presented in the class and look at strategies to prepare for exams throughout the year. By the end of the course, you will be well on your way to conquering AP Physics!

GET AHEAD! APUSH: This course will prepare rising juniors for success in their AP US History Course. Students will learn advanced reading and note taking strategies while reviewing sample AP questions and DBQ writings.

College Test Prep 101 - Students will learn about all of the college bound tests (Pre-ACT, PSAT, ACT, and SAT): format, question types, timing, etc. They will also learn when these tests are offered, special opportunities during certain testing times, how to plan their own testing schedule, and when to begin working on long term skills and strategies. I will also briefly review the SAT Subject Tests and provide links to more information. (Rising sophomores will be given first registration priority)

Grammar and Mechanics Through Writing - This seminar will teach students the fundamental grammar and mechanics rules necessary for good writing. Students will write short pieces in various genres, and then learn to apply key rules in grammar and punctuation to improve their own writing. In addition, we will review common grammar and mechanics rules students need to know for future classwork and testing.

Critical Reading Strategies - Fiction and Critical Reading Strategies - The Essay - In these two separate seminars, students will be reading short passages and learning how to answer multi-level questions - main idea, detail, word in context, inference/evaluation, for example - in different types of readings. Some time will be spent on reading and interpreting similarities and differences in similar passages since both the ACT and SAT require passage comparisons as part of their reading sections.

Crafting the Essay - Fiction, Non-fiction/Opinion, Persuasion, and Narrative - In these four separate seminars, students will be reading a short work and then formulating a strong essay from start (thoughts and outlines) to finish (a product worthy of framing - and definitely an A!). I'll cover the basics of creating introductions and conclusions, writing detailed and well supported body paragraphs, constructing effective transitions, and establishing clear logic and coherence. Emphasis will be on several drafts so students can watch their progression as writers. We will be meeting together for lessons, and I am happy to schedule some additional time to work independently with students (small fee assessed).

"In Between the Lines" - If the play's your thing, we'll be running lines from various plays and scene selections to work on acting methodology and character development, as well as inflection and physical expression.

Creative Writing - This is for anyone who wants to write and share in a nurturing environment. Any creative work will be welcome: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, song, or play. We'll focus on the basics of the different genres, and we'll write our own - me, too! The philosophy here will be positive reinforcement from the group. In addition, I am happy to offer personal reflections with the student. There is a creative writer inside everyone, and it often simply takes the right comfort zone to prove that true.

Writing the Research Paper - While this seminar may not be the most exciting one for students, knowing the basics of research is critical to completing an academic paper of this kind in college. In this seminar we'll work on the basics of research. We'll be constructing a very short paper because the emphasis will be on the steps students need to follow, including finding sources; taking notes; summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting sources; developing internal citations; and creating a Works Cited page. We will follow MLA format, but I will provide information on APA as well. Students will be ready to enter high school or college with strong research skills.

Young Adult Readers' Roundtable - This group is designed for enthusiastic readers in Grades 6-8. We'll gather nominations for books to consider, and then vote on one for our roundtable. Students will have a few weeks to read the book and then we'll meet to answer engaging questions. There will be an opportunity for a second Roundtable if there is interest in doing so.

The College Application/Essay Process - Rising seniors will learn the organizational process for this next large step in their lives. I'll cover many topics, including application types, deadline options, transcripts and recommendations information (and making the most of them!), the process of submitting test scores, ways to stand out on applications, and sample essay topics and guidelines to writing a good essay.
