BETA READER: A beta reader helps with unfinished manuscripts, much earlier in the creative process. The book as you get it is in a more raw format before professional editing and proofreading. You help the author understand where they can improve on pacing, descriptions, etc. You would be provided a manuscript (with a non-disclosure agreement to not share the story) and a list of questions before and/or after to help understand where things can be improved. Was a particular scene too brief to get the point across? Are you struggling to understand a character's motivation? Is any particular point boring? *Documents are provided via Google Docs.
ARC REVIEWER: ARC stands for Advance Review Copy or Advance Reader Copy. This is a finished or almost-finished copy of the manuscript given to select readers to read ahead of time for the purpose of marketing. They're asked to review the book on websites such as Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. They also help with different things such as blog and social media posts. Like beta readers, ARC reviewers are expected to not share the manuscript or details about it unless/until approved by the author/publisher.
*I've found that Google doesn't always notify me when someone applies, so you may also want to email me (especially if it's been a while and you haven't heard back.)
