Eureka Sings: Workshops For Teachers
A series of FREE workshops geared towards K-12 and community college educators, voice teachers,music education students, church choral directors, and anyone interested in incorporating diverse repertoire into their teaching and practice.
All music educators are welcome!
This series is generously funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Central Illinois.
An Introduction to Latin American MusicDr. Adriana Martinez will share vocal and choral repertoire suggestions and teaching strategies for folk, popular, and classical Latin American music, accessible to a range of ages and voicings. She will discuss history and culture, language pronunciation, and programming considerations. Participants will leave with resources and repertoire lists that will enable them to incorporate Latin American musics meaningfully into their teaching practice.
Session A Brief Historical Introduction to Latin America and its Musics (10 am to 12 pm)
Session B Musical Tour of Latin America (12:30 pm to 2:30 pm)
You may attend one or both sessions, in person (recommended) or via Zoom.
Light lunch will be provided in between sessions to in-person attendees.
Up to 4 hours of professional development credit is available!
Presenter Bio:
Born in Mexico City, Mexico, Dr. Adriana Martínez is Assistant Professor of Music at Eureka College, where she teaches music history, music theory, voice, and directs the opera workshop. A versatile singer and scholar, her teaching and research focuses on the role that music plays in the formation of national identity in Latin America and the United States. She has presented her research at national and international conferences, including a lecture-recital on Latin American art song at the Central Region NATS conference in October 2021. As a singer, she appeared most recently as Mimì in La Bohème with MIOpera in Normal and has performed throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Austria. She is also an active choral singer and is currently a member of Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana. Dr. Martínez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Charleston (WV) and a Master’s and PhD in Musicology from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (NY). www.adrianamf.com
