Saturday Morning Astrophysics at Purdue (SMAP) is a monthly in a remote (Zoom) format for middle and high school students in grades 7-12. Learn about astro research, the history and people behind discovery, current topics, and basic principles related to physics and astronomy.
Physics and Astronomy faculty and research scientists introduce each SMAP session with the background relevant to the topic – what is significant, what science is involved, what questions exist, how we go about answering them, and what our results mean.
SMAP sessions typically last for 60-75 minutes. We will use breakout rooms to do hands-on activities where you can work in small groups with other SMAP students and teaching assistants to gather data and talk about results. When we return to the main room, our guest speaker will wrap up with answers to your question and discussion and apply what you have learned..
You do not have to be a science whiz, you just need to be interested in astronomy and related topics. We'll fill in the details.
SMAP is presented monthly (exact Saturdays will vary) at 11:00 AM Eastern (US) time. We will email registered students and their adult contacts monthly, with the date, the upcoming topic, and any documents you might want to print or have on hand for the lesson.
