Committee Descriptions
Bar Exam Committee:

Conducts projects to assist those taking the North Carolina Bar Exam, including through preparation and distribution of information and resources to help with preparing for and taking the exam and by holding bar exam preparation clinics for law students in conjunction with the February and July Bars.

Civic Engagement Committee:

Develops resources and program designed to educate and empower young lawyers to become the next generation of dynamic and innovative leaders in our community through politics, non-profits, appointed positions, and advocacy.

Communications Committee:

Solicits and writes articles for the YLD's Blog, the Advocate, and coordinates authorship and publication of articles written by young lawyers and law students on various topics which are relevant to the YLD membership.  Committee further oversees distribution of the monthly e-blast to YLD membership with information on important dates and upcoming events.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee:

Promotes inclusion and participation of diverse persons and viewpoints within the YLD and the legal profession; addresses issues that affect or are of interest to diverse lawyers; works to build a more robust pipeline of diverse law school applicants by providing information and resources to college students who seek to enter the legal profession, including through the Lawyers EDGE program.  

DLS (Disaster Legal Services) Committee:

Updates and creates documents related to disaster legal services for the state of North Carolina for attorneys and citizens and coordinates with Legal Aid of North Carolina and other stakeholders to provide education to North Carolina attorneys who wish to provide pro bono services as they relate to natural disasters in the state.

Foundation & Development Committee:

Conducts fundraising and development initiatives to support the charitable work of the North Carolina Bar Foundation by increasing annual giving; educates YLD members about the functions of the North Carolina Bar Foundation and encourages support of the North Carolina Bar Foundation among YLD members; and provides YLD committees with assistance in organized fundraising for projects.


Law Student Outreach Committee:

Organizes panel presentations, networking events, and other initiatives to connect law students with practicing attorneys in partnership with each of North Carolina law school's NCBA Law Student Representatives and other law school organizations.  Assists local bar associations with planning and holding welcome events for law student summer clerks and interns.  Coordinates outreach efforts to out of state law students who plan to practice in North Carolina after graduation, including through periodic updates to the Out of State Law Student Manual when needed.

Law Week and Liberty Bell:

Conducts moot court competitions, essay, poster art, video and photo essay contests for students; coordinates Law Week activities; and presents the YLD's annual Liberty Bell Award.

Legal Feeding Frenzy:

Committee volunteers plan and coordinate a State-wide competition among North Carolina legal organizations to raise food and fund donations to the North Carolina Association of Food Bank affiliates.  Past competitions have featured collaborations with the NC Attorney General's office, as well as firms, legal organizations, law schools, and corporations across the State.

Legal LINK:

Legal LINK (Leadership, Information, Networking, and Knowledge) is a program designed to increase interest in legal careers among high school students who are underrepresented in the legal profession.  Legal LINK consists of four 1-hour sessions focused on each of the LINK building blocks and includes a field trip to a local law school or courthouse.

Member Outreach Committee:

Promotes member participation in the YLD; plans joint socials with YLD and county/affinity bar associations; assists the New Lawyers in Practice Committee with PNA networking events; assists the Law Student Outreach Committee with law school visits to discuss the benefits of NCBA membership.  This committee also plans the YLD's events at the annual meeting and assists with planning quarterly meetings.

New Lawyers in Practice Committee:

Works to help young lawyers build practical skills as they become new members of the profession by planning “How-To Series” Workshops; assist with panel discussions at the annual Professionalism for New Attorneys [PNA] for newly admitted lawyers and assisting the Member Outreach Committee with networking events for newly admitted lawyers.  Creates web based and podcast resources on leadership and the business of law to support new lawyers.

Pro Bono Committee:

Coordinates and provides YLD members with information regarding pro bono opportunities within the YLD, the NCBA and with other affinity bars and organizations.  Promotes recognition of the accomplishments of the Citizen Lawyers by interviewing and publishing articles on such individuals. This committee selects the Younger Lawyer Pro Bono Award winner in conjunction with the YLD Executive Committee.  

Wellness Committee:

Focuses on wellness and quality of life for lawyers; specifically, the committee promotes exercise, fitness, healthy living, and mental well-being through articles, tips, and planned activities.
