You will be taking the SAT at school this month. Please share your College Board account information with us so that we can print a copy of your score for UB (we need username and password). If you are not comfortable sharing these or do not know them, please give your Academic Advisor a copy of your scores when they arrive. *
Visit https://blog.prepscholar.com/college-essay-ideas and read over the article on writing college essays. We would like you to brainstorm some ideas from this site that you might find helpful when you start applying to colleges this fall. You do NOT need to write an essay for each of these but please write at least a paragraph.
Brainstorming Technique 1: Think About Defining Moments in Your Life
What are you most proud of about yourself? Is it a talent or skill? A personality trait or quality? An accomplishment? Why is this the thing that makes you proud? Write at least a paragraph on this topic. *
Brainstorming Technique 2: Remember Influential People
Which teacher has challenged you the most? What has that challenge been? How did you respond? Write at least a paragraph on this topic. *
Brainstorming Technique 3: Recreate Important Times or Places
What is your favorite (or least favorite) corner of, or space in, the place where you live? What do you like (or dislike) about it? Write at least a paragraph on this topic. *
Brainstorming Technique 4: Answer Thought-Provoking Questions
Which traditions that you grew up with will you pass on (these can be as simple as what you do to celebrate certain holidays)? Which will you ignore? Why? Write at least a paragraph on this topic. *
Brainstorming Technique 5: Find a Trait or Characteristic and Trace It Back
How would your best friend describe you? What about your parents? How are the adjectives they'd come up with different from the ones you'd use?  Write at least a paragraph on this topic. *
If applying to out-of-state or Ivy League colleges, author (and Elkins native) Jon Corcoran recommends brainstorming the following question to help your story stand out. Many times we don't think about our experience growing up in WV as unique because it is what we are accustomed to.
Brainstorm one or more answers to the question below and keep it in mind when you are writing your college essays in the fall.
Talk about something that you have done in your life that a "rich kid in NYC" has probably never done before? Give details as if you are describing these to someone who has never experienced them. What have these experiences added to your life? *
