Thanks for your interest in becoming a referee! You must be 14 years old before you can begin the referee training.
READ THIS FIRST! MassRef has outlined the process to become a referee on their website -->
https://www.massref.net/becoming-a-referee/steps-to-become-referee/.
If you are still interested after reading through the MassRef link you can sign up for a course on their website
https://central.massref.net/courseofferings.cfm. Specifically, you will want to find a "New Referee - Orientation" class you will be able to attend. Once you finish the first class you will need to sign up for the field session so look for the class "New Referee - Outdoor Field Session" and sign up for one of those as well. Locations for the field session are determined by MassRef so if you don't want to travel far look for one close by.
Ultimately it comes to down to 5 main parts to the program:
1. National Grassroots online pre-course, which is run through the US Soccer website
https://learning.ussoccer.com/. This becomes available to you when signing up for the "Orientation" online class at MassRef.
2 Supplemental courses through the US Soccer website
https://learning.ussoccer.com/.
3. MassRef online course that is a 2 hour online session with an instructor, this is the "Orientation" class mentioned above
4. A 2 hour in person field session run through MassRef "Outdoor Field session" class mentioned above
5. Post-Course Test that needs at least an 80% score (can be taken multiple times).
IMPORTANT: Make sure the referee uses the same email address for their accounts on MassRef and the US Soccer website.
LYSA’s policy for reimbursement for the course and the referee kit kicks in after 5 games are officiated for Lunenburg Youth Soccer. We will fully reimburse the cost of the course $115 and up to $60 for the referee kit, so save receipts!
Referee kits can be purchased online at the Official Sports website
https://officialsports.com/off-field-apparel/starter-kits/ or in person at Soccer Stuff in Acton.
Kits will be needed for the on field portion of the training. You should get a kit that has at least the yellow shirt, black shorts, black socks and AR flags. I may have some donated flags from previous referees so feel free to ask.
You will also need a whistle. I personally recommend the Fox 40 or the electronic Fox 40. Both of the Fox 40 whistles work more consistently than a whistle with the pea inside.
I hope this information has been helpful and I look forward to working with you!
