We thank you for your interest in requesting the use of the digital images of the Resilient Sisterhood Project paintings. Please fill out the form below.

In 2018, Resilient Sisterhood Project commissioned three paintings by African-American artist Jules Arthur, to honor and tell the story of three enslaved women from the 1840s. These three paintings entitled Foremothers of Gynecology, depict their lives. In 1840s Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. James Marion Sims, exercised inhumane and unethical experimentation on nearly a dozen Black enslaved women including Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy, known only by their first names. The paintings were commissioned by a group of women supporters of Resilient Sisterhood Project.
