Volunteer at Hillview, 2021-22
Many exciting things are happening at Hillview, which means there are many ways for you to join the school community! Please take a look below to see some of the opportunities to get involved.

Clicking "yes" next to any of the selections will ensure that you receive e-mails throughout the year regarding that particular volunteer opportunity. You can choose to help based on your availability at the time of the request. *You are not committing to anything at this time! You are adding your name to an email list for the activity/event coordinators, who will contact you with information closer to the date.*

If you have any trouble with the form or have any questions about getting involved, please contact Hillview's PTO Volunteer Coordinator, Kelly Morehead, at volunteer@hillviewpto.org.

*** We hope to resume our school activities this fall. Due to the uncertainties of the pandemic, however, some or all of the activities may change or be canceled. We will follow the directives of the San Mateo County Health Department. We will keep volunteers updated as we get more information. Thank you for your flexibility and your willingness to help! ***

ACADEMY SUPPORT
Academy Parent
Are you interested in serving as a Co-Academy Parent? This is similar to acting as a room parent at elementary school, but less labor intensive since there are fewer events to coordinate. You may be asked by your child's teachers to do some or all of the following: help recruit chaperones for a field trip; coordinate classroom volunteers to help with a special project; or arrange for food at a holiday party or end of year party. You will be contacted by the Academy Parent Coordinator once student academy assignments have been announced and after the coordinator has been able to gauge parent interest for each academy.
Academy Support
Are you interested in volunteer opportunities related to your child's academy? This could be acting as a chaperone on a field trip, helping out with a special project in the classroom, bringing food to a classroom celebration, or other tasks as needed. You will be contacted throughout the year by the Academy Parents regarding these opportunities.
GRADE-LEVEL EVENTS
6th Grade Orientation: Camp Hillview
Camp Hillview, held on Wednesday, 8/18, allows the 6th graders a full day to get comfortable with the campus before returning students arrive.  During this orientation day, they have the opportunity to learn about the school and their classes.  Check "yes" if you can volunteer to help starting at 8:30 AM, passing out information on hot lunch, academy opportunities, etc. The specifics of this day may change pending directives from the San Mateo County Health Department; we will keep volunteers informed in case of changes or cancellations.
6th Grade Greek Olympics
Date TBD. Organized by the PE and Social Studies Departments, this event supplements the 6th grade Greek History unit. Volunteers will help run Olympic games out on the field, and ensure the kids don't get beaned by flying javelins or mis-thrown shot puts.
8th Grade BBQ
Help serve food for the 8th graders as a special lunch celebration in June 2022.
8th Grade Graduation Party Committee
This is the fabulous end-of-year bash open to all 8th graders. A planning committee is in place, and they need many volunteers to help execute.
STUDENT ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Math Clinic and Homework Center
Volunteer to help out students who are stuck on a concept or need some extra support. Both the Math Clinic and Homework Center are open to students to get assistance on a drop in basis after school, Monday through Thursday. Check "yes" if you are interested in helping out with the math clinic or homework center after school. You will be contacted by the staff coordinator.
SPECIALIST SUPPORT
Art
Assist with displaying art at school art shows and around campus.
Music
Help coordinate events (i.e., performances at the local Farmer’s Markets and at Disneyland). Sell band t-shirts, create programs and arrange transportation to and from performances.
Drama
There are many ways to help out with the drama program! These include: producing and publicizing the performances, creating playbills, assisting with costumes and props, helping build sets, selling tickets and concessions at the shows, wrangling kids backstage, and coordinating cast parties.
Library
Mend books, cover new books, and shelve books. Other tasks include transporting books to and from Encinal and Oak Knoll.
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES
Hot Lunch
Set up and serve lunch (provided by our outside vendor) to students. The time commitment is less than one hour. Sign up for a regular shift -- either a "lead" shift (very easy; you will be trained), or however times/month you like. You pick your shift based on the openings available; you can sign up to work with people you know. This is a great way to meet other Hillview parents and get a glimpse into the life of a middle schooler. Plus, volunteers earn one free hot lunch credit ($5.25) for their student every time they serve. The Hot Lunch Coordinator will contact you and let you pick from available shifts.
Dances and Hawkapalooza
If you check "Dances," the PTO coordinator will contact you throughout the year about setting up and chaperoning the various dances; you can sign up then for whatever works for you. Hawkapalooza is the end-of-year field day for all Hillview students. It's organized by Mr. Darmanin and the ASB (the Hillview student government), but they need adults to help run the events on the actual day. If you check "Hawkapalooza," you will receive a request to help with the event, tentatively scheduled for September 2021; sign up if you are available. These events will take place per the direction of the San Mateo County Health Department.
Hillview After School Sports Teams
Are you interested in helping coach an after school sports team? You do not have to have a child participating in that sport to help coach. Check "yes" and the coordinator will contact you regarding coaching opportunities and details.
MPCSD Speaker Series
MPCSD provides speakers on a variety of topics. These evening events are offered free of charge, and take place approximately once a month throughout the school year at the Hillview PAC. Each school takes turns providing volunteers  to help check people in, and help with set up and clean up for each event. The time commitment is minimal and front row seats are reserved for volunteers! Check "yes" and you will be contacted by the speaker series coordinator about volunteer opportunities for these events. Note: the Fall speaker series will be held virtually this year.
STEM Fair
All students who are interested are able to participate in Hillview's annual teacher-organized STEM fair. Volunteers are needed to act as mentors to STEM fair participants and to help evaluate finished projects.
Breakfast Cafe
Volunteers provide food for the Breakfast Cafe, a program that provides daily breakfast to Hillview students in need.  Check "yes" and you will receive information throughout the year about volunteering for College Bound events.
STAFF APPRECIATION AND HOSPITALITY
Staff Appreciation
Set up and provide food for meals honoring faculty and staff. It’s as easy as dropping off a salad for a lunch or a breakfast treat for the coffee cart. These events take place throughout the year. By checking "yes," you will receive information throughout the year about volunteering for these types of appreciation events.
GENERAL HELP
General Help
We often have last-minute requests for help. If you are willing to be contacted to fill in for various needs throughout the school year, please check yes. There are no specific obligations.
