University of Minnesota Undergraduate Genetic Counseling Volunteer Application
The goal of this program is to provide a volunteer experience for undergraduate students or graduates interested in entering the field of genetic counseling. If you would like to learn more about genetic counseling to determine if this is the career for you, participating in a research or clinical volunteer setting with a genetic counselor can provide you with valuable information and experience.

Instructions: Please fill out this entire questionnaire.

An informational interview may be conducted either in person or over the phone, according to the genetic counselor’s preferences before beginning a volunteer or research opportunity. With this application you will be put into a pool of potential volunteers, applicants are placed on a case-by-case basis dependent on the needs and research projects available.

*** If you are participating in a research volunteer experience, you will need CITI training (https://www.citiprogram.org/) before beginning your volunteering.  If you are working with patient information or attending a clinic, it is very important that you follow all rules of HIPAA to protect patient privacy and dress in professional attire. You may have to complete HIPAA training prior to shadowing depending on the site. Failure of professionalism and/or HIPAA compliance will result in dismissal from clinic and the program.  If you have any questions, please email gcgrad@umn.edu or 612-626-3267 or Heather Zierhut at zier0034@umn.edu or 612-626-6743 for more information.
