Dear respondent,

Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey to assess the burden of cardiovascular surgical disease around the world, for which your expertise is greatly valued. The survey is short and will take no longer than ten minutes.

Through this survey, we want to get an understanding of what proportion of cardiovascular diseases require cardiovascular surgical or interventional cardiological care, as opposed to only medical (pharmacological and conservative) care. This is important in order to get an understanding of the approximate global burden of cardiac surgical disease and, in turn, hold national and international leaders accountable for existing gaps and disparities in the provision of cardiac care. Although cardiovascular diseases remain the world’s major disease killer responsible for 18 million deaths each year, of which over 80 percent take place in low- and middle-income countries, nearly six billion people remain without access to safe, timely, and affordable cardiac surgical or interventional care when needed.

This study is unfunded and does not involve any conflicts of interest. Your participation is voluntary and you can stop the study at any time. The study involves only minimal risk, as no identifiers will be collected from you. Your de-identified information will not be used by or shared with other researchers. Your de-identified responses will not be used to change clinical care, but to better understand the global met and unmet need for cardiac surgical care. Your anonymous responses will only be seen by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Mark G. Shrime, and the Research Coordinator, Dr. Dominique Vervoort. Ethics approval for this survey was obtained at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
