Bat Box Most nursery colonies of bats choose roosts within 1/4 mile of water, preferably a stream, river or lake. Greatest bat-house success has been achieved in areas of diverse habitat, especially where there is a mixture of varied agricultural use and natural vegetation. Bat houses are most likely to succeed in regions where bats are already attempting to live in buildings.

Wood Duck Box Nesting habitat requirements include forested edges of ponds, rivers and wetlands. Feeding grounds are open waterways and brood rearing habitat requires direct access to water with adequate forest or shrubbery cover from predators. Nesting boxes can be installed either above water, with consideration for high water levels, or on land, set back from the shoreline. Nests should not be placed close (minimum 600' spacing) to other wood duck nesting sites.

Bluebird Box Bluebirds prefer open areas or sparsely wooded forests. They are often seen on fence lines, from which they can fly down and grab food. Nest boxes should be installed along woodland edges or in open areas.They can be installed on existing fence posts (as long as they are appropriately tall) or onto metal poles to prevent predators accessing the nest.

Barn Owl Box A family of barn owls (two adults and 3-5 chicks) can consume between 2000-3000 gophers and other rodent pests in a single year. They hunt in open fields at night. Nest boxes should be placed away from roadways and areas with human activity.

Kestrel Box Kestrels are a declining species in much of the United States and are of particular interest in this project. They prefer open habitat near woodlines so they can access trees for perching and nesting. They are cavity nesters and can benefit from snags left standing or installation of nesting boxes.

Raptor/Hawk Roost The diversity of raptor species results in a diversity of habitat and nesting requirements, including understories of coniferous forests (e.g., northern goshawk) to mixed and deciduous woodlands (sharp-shinned hawk) to open country (red-tailed hawk) to riparian habitats (e.g. osprey, bald eagle). Your provided site description and a technical support site visit will help to determine the suitability of your site.
